DIAGNOSTIC INFORMATION AND PROCEDURES > DTC C0710: STEERING POSITION SIGNAL
> CIRCUIT/SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
The electronic brake control module (EBCM) supplies a 5 V reference and provides a low reference to the steering
wheel angle sensor. The EBCM monitors the signal circuit and the three phase circuits to determine the steering
wheel position. The EBCM receives three signal inputs from the steering wheel speed/position sensor. The Index
Pulse signal is only High when the steering wheel is centered or within a few degrees of the straight ahead position.
The 2 input signals Phase A and Phase B are approximately 90 degrees out of phase. The EBCM dynamically
interprets the relationship between the Phase A and Phase B inputs and determines the position of the steering
wheel and the direction of the steering wheel rotation.

DIAGNOSTIC INFORMATION AND PROCEDURES > DTC C0710: STEERING POSITION SIGNAL
> CONDITIONS FOR RUNNING THE DTC

Ignition ON.

DIAGNOSTIC INFORMATION AND PROCEDURES > DTC C0710: STEERING POSITION SIGNAL
> CONDITIONS FOR SETTING THE DTC

Phase A and Phase B signal resistance values do not correlate to one another.
The calculated steering angle from the steering wheel position sensor does not correlate with the steering
angle calculated from the yaw rate.

DIAGNOSTIC INFORMATION AND PROCEDURES > DTC C0710: STEERING POSITION SIGNAL
> ACTION TAKEN WHEN THE DTC SETS

The EBCM disables the vehicle stability enhancement system for the duration of the ignition cycle.
The driver information center (DIC) displays the Service Stability System message.
The antilock brake system (ABS) remains functional.
The traction control and the stability indicators illuminate.

DIAGNOSTIC INFORMATION AND PROCEDURES > DTC C0710: STEERING POSITION SIGNAL
> CONDITIONS FOR CLEARING THE DTC

The condition for the DTC is no longer present.

The EBCM clears the history DTC when a current DTC is not detected in 100 consecutive drive cycles.

DIAGNOSTIC INFORMATION AND PROCEDURES > DTC C0710: STEERING POSITION SIGNAL
> DIAGNOSTIC AIDS

Before any in-depth diagnostics are performed, be aware that DTC C0710 may set if the vehicle has been
modified with; suspension lift/lowering kits, the incorrect indexing of the steering shaft to the steering gear or
the wrong steering gear installed or if other than stock size wheels and tires have been installed.
To correct a fretting condition disconnect the suspect connector and add Nyogel lubricant 760G (dielectric
grease) to both sides of the connector terminals. Then reconnect the connector and wipe away any excess
lubricant. This will correct the additional terminal contact resistance due to the terminal fretting corrosion.
During diagnosis, park the vehicle on a level surface.
The vehicle should not pull in either direction while driving straight on a level surface.
Verify the steering wheel and steering wheel angle sensor is installed correctly.
Verify the steering shaft coupling to the steering gear is properly installed and aligned.
Find out from the customer the conditions under which the DTC was set. This information will help to duplicate
the failure.
The snapshot function on the scan tool can help find an intermittent DTC.

DIAGNOSTIC INFORMATION AND PROCEDURES > DTC C0710: STEERING POSITION SIGNAL
> CIRCUIT/SYSTEM VERIFICATION

NOTE: If the condition is intermittent or cannot be duplicated,

disconnect the connectors and add Nyogel lubricant 760G. This
procedure will correct the high resistance condition due to terminal
fretting corrosion.

1. Ignition ON.

2. Verify the scan tool Steering Wheel Position parameter corresponds to the actual steering wheel position as the
steering wheel is turned through its entire range of motion.

1. If the parameter does not correspond with the steering wheel position or the reading is erratic
Refer to Circuit/System Testing.

1. If the parameter corresponds with the steering wheel position

3. Verify the scan tool Digital HWPS Index Pulse parameter cycles between Low and High as the steering wheel is
centered and then turned through its entire range of motion.

1. If the parameter does not cycle between Low and High as the steering wheel is turned
Refer to Circuit/System Testing.

1. If the parameter cycles between Low and High as the steering wheel is turned

4. All OK.
