Chapter 3

RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODOLOGY

This chapter underscored the details of the research. Specifically, it highlighted the

methods and techniques applied by the researcher in conducting the research, the respondents of

this study, the instruments which were used to conduct the study, and the process which was

utilized by the researcher in gathering data.

Under qualitative research, the researchers used phenomenological research design which

Population and Sample of the Study

The respondents of this study were the selected grade 11 Senior High School students in

the HUMSS section in Hermosa National High School. The researcher employed purposive

sampling. (why?)

Sampling Technique deals with selecting representative of the respondents from a

population to evaluate features of the entire population.

Cognizant to this, the researcher used Purposive Sampling (definition from expert)

To satisfy the need to gather data in this study, the researcher had (number of respondents)

respondents.

Instrument of the Study

To gather data in this study, the researcher employed a teacher-made test as the main

measurement device which was divided into four parts, first part is Capitalization and Punctuation

which tests the respondents’ skills with the appropriate application of punctuation marks and the

application of proper capitalization. The next part of the test measured the respondents’

paraphrasing skills. In this part, the respondents were given 10 statements or quotations which they

need to paraphrase. Furthermore, the third part required the respondents to read and summarize a

text. Lastly, the respondents’ outlining skills was assessed and the researcher used a rubric in order

for to evaluate the respondents’ skills paraphrasing summary and outline.

Moreover, to achieve the validity of the instrument and measure what it intends to measure,

the researcher let the experts validate her instrument. The validators were the professors of English

and a master teacher in the cooperating institution who are considered experts in the field of

English. ( DO NOT INCLUDE)

Data Gathering Procedure

Before the conduct of the interview, the researches let their research teacher validate their

interview schedule in order for this to fit the needs of the research sought permission to the

Principal of the institution as well as to the Assistant Principal if the students may serve as
respondents of her study. As soon as the letter was signed as a symbol for approval, the researcher

then administered the test.

Moreover, the test was given on the Midterm Period of the said classes at Hermosa National

High School and they only have an hour and half to answer the test.

The data collected through questionnaire administration were processed by means of

rubrics. A rubric, as defined by Campus Labs (2016), is a list or chart that designates the criteria

that one employed to measure the performance. Rubrics are beneficial tools in evaluating what the

learner learns, understand, and performs which can be tough to evaluate in more outmoded

assessment systems.
