Executive summary

This report is to explain that engineering is one of the best offering courses in Malaysia
and other countries so that students can understand and to dream about their futures.
Engineers especially mechanical engineers are very demanding nowadays as they can
enter other job prospects as well. Engineers have more creative thinking and have many
ways to encounter problems in our life. Other than that, engineers are also one of the
most high salary jobs next to medical courses but with less working times.
Our group which consist of four members, which are Azeeb, Afif, Hafiszul and Mariana,
had found at least 50 job advertisements published by well-known companies such as
Petronas which demanded for someone with B.Eng. (Hons.), Mechanical Engineering
qualification to work with them. But some companies demanded for some special
qualities of engineer. So our group had identified each and every qualities needed by the
companies. We had tabulated the data in three groups which are technical ability,
information and communications technology (ICT) skills and communication/
interpersonal skills.
Technical skills are those abilities acquired through learning and practice. They are often
job or task specific; in other words, a particular skill set or proficiency required to
perform a specific job or task. Most companies demand an employee with skills in
machinery. Every mechanical engineer should know how to handle machines as their job
scope is around machines and devices. Somehow some companies prefer an employee
with very specific skills such as having skills in air conditioning system,hydraulic system
maintenance skills and welding. Some of the skills can be learn in classes as some
mechanical engineering programs provide it but some skills needs working experiences.
Only through working that those skills can be enhance. In mechanical engineering
program, LI or knowns as latihan industri is a nice chance for students to enhance their
skills and understand how working life goes. Besides that, companies prefer an engineer
with good skills in technical drawings. Technical drawing is actually must have skills for
engineers especially mechanical engineers. as their job scope include design and create
devices. Most mechanical engineering programs provide classes for those specific skills
so that their graduates can be an all rounded person. Besides that, some of the companies
prefer an employee with at least knowledge in basic electrical circuit. This is relevant as
mechanical engineers needs those basic and mechanical process to design new devices
and solve real world problems.

An employee with ICT skills are highly demanded by companies. Most companies wants
an employee with at least a basic in autoCad, MS Excel and MS Words. Some companies
prefer employee that knows very well in coding and programming. Thus make it easier
for them to handle works related to computer. There is a specific subject in mechanical
engineering program called computer science for students to learn the skills in coding and
programming.Like other engineers, mechanical engineers use computers extensively.
Computer helps mechanical engineers create and analyze designs, run simulations and
test how a machine likely to work, and generate specification for parts. Another reason
why ICT skills are important is that most companies’ data management are through
computers, that why it is very important for graduates in any course to have this skills not
only engineering programs. That is why, most companies highly prefer candidates that is
a computer literate. In mechanical engineering program, those skills can be learn in class.
In addition, most of their assignments use computer, that indirectly increase students’ ICT
skills and thus, make it easier for them to apply their knowledge at work in the future.

Communication skills is the ability to convey information to another effectively and

efficiently. Most companies in Malaysia would prefer graduates that can speaks, write
and understand major languages. The major language prefer by companies are English
language. English are international language so good proficiency in English are needed
by engineers. Every students from mechanical engineering programs need to get at least
band 4 in their MUET when they graduate from the program. The second major language
is mandarin. Most of the people working in the industry are Chinese, so in order to
communicate better and improve teamwork, having proficiency in mandarin language is
beneficial. Besides, China is a well leading country in engineering industry. The third
major language is Malay. It is the official language of the country, not having proficiency
in Malay language makes it hard to communicate with others. Besides languages,
companies want an employee that is good as a leader. In many projects ade by engineers,
there is many people working with engineer, thus having an engineer with leadership
skills make it easier to manage and supervise the project. In addition, companies also
prefer candidates that is an excellent team player. For the same reason, engineers works
with everyone, not having a good teamwork would give bad reputation to the
management. Companies also want candidates that are able to multitask and work
independently. That is why student need to be teach skills in university so they are able to
be an all rounded mechanical engineers once they are graduated.

In a conclusion, they are many jobs offer for graduates with B.Eng. (Hons.), Mechanical
Engineering. Mechanical engineering program provided by UITM are good as it teaches
skills to make sure their graduates meet up with the requirement needed by companies
out there.
