GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR INFECTION CONTROL FOR THERAPY SPACES

Infection control is the responsibility of every staff member. All staff are expected to follow the HUP Infection Control policy, which can be found
on the www.teamgspp.com website, under the Infection Control link. The guidelines below outline the procedure for adhering to the Infection
Control policy in the rehab environment, where the patient may need to spend a large portion of their day outside of their room.

PATIENT TRANSPORT:

Standard precautions (including appropriate hand hygiene) should be maintained for all patients, and performed before and after glove
application/removal. For patients on isolation precautions, the appropriate PPE is required prior to entry into the patient room (check signage for
appropriate PPE). Staff should be wearing the appropriate PPE regardless of the site/type of infection (i.e. colonized MRSA vs. draining wound). All
contaminated PPE should be removed before exiting the patient room, and disposed of in the appropriate container (trash vs soiled linen container).

Patient may leave the room to attend therapy and ambulate in the hall, but must wear a clean gown at all times when outside of their room. The
patient may remove the gown only when they have returned to their assigned room.

Therapy/aide staff must wear appropriate PPE while preparing the patient for and during all aspects of transport (for contact precautions: staff must
wear both a contact gown and gloves at all times).

EQUIPMENT:

All equipment should be disinfected after patient use, following the principles of universal precautions and with disinfectant wipes as follows:
- Hydrogen Peroxide Wipes – 1 minute wet time
- Bleach Wipes – 3 minutes wet time for C-diff
- **CRE** - use of Clorox bleach wipes with wet time for 30 seconds

When possible, the patient should use their own DME from home.

Whenever possible, equipment should be dedicated for single-use by patients on isolation precautions (i.e. disposable stethoscopes, disposable BR
cuffs, etc) and should be disposed of when a patient is discharged from the IRF/LTACH.

In the cases of loaner/trial equipment from the therapy department (wheelchairs, walkers/canes), equipment should be assigned to a patient for the
duration of their stay, and should be transported to/from the gym for therapy.

Adequate disinfection must be completed on all equipment before it is recycled for use by other patients: within a therapy session (ie. dowels, and
other non-porous surfaces), or at the end of a patient stay (ie. walker, transfer board, etc).

GYM SPACE(S):

Staff must be in appropriate PPE (gown and gloves) for any contact with the patient, or surfaces that have been in contact with the patient. If you are
providing verbal instruction only (and providing no physical contact), you may not necessarily need full PPE (gown/glove) but should always make a
conservative decision to protect yourself and other patients.

Any surfaces or equipment contacted by any patient (regardless of isolation precautions) should be disinfected using the approved disinfectant wipes.
Any surface suspected of contamination with c-diff spores must be thoroughly cleaned with Clorox bleach.

Patients on contact precautions should not share a mat with another individual.

DINING ROOM/COMMON AREAS:

Patients on contact precautions may eat in the common dining room, but must be wearing their gown. They should be seated at a separate table, or
maintain a safe distance from one another, to avoid any cross-contamination. Staff should err on the side of caution, and seat a patient alone (using a
tray table if necessary) to maintain contact precautions.
