Features

Water system energy-saving control

A5MWC-BR series units possess a unique algorithm that control the chilled water pump, cooling water pump
and cooling tower. It can switch on or off the cooling tower based on the temperature of the cooling water.
Once all compressor is unloaded, cooling water pump will be shutdown. Thus, effectively lowering the energy
consumption of the system during transitions season or low load operation. The unit also has a two-way valve
interlocking function. In the event where all fan coil is not in operation, the unit will shut down the pumps and
cooling tower prior of entering standby status.

Low carbon and environment friendly

The unit is capable of providing cooling and heating through different system design. Energy recovery model
is available for a better efficiency and energy saving application. R410A refrigerant is also used, further
enhancing its environment sustainability due to the zero ozone depletion potential of R410A refrigerant.
.

Dual backup operation increase reliability

There are 3 or 4 sets of compressor in every single unit, failure of single compressor will not affect the opera-
tion of the unit. Whereas failure of a unit in a combination application will not jeopardize the entire system.
A5MWC-BR series does not need another master unit as standby for multiple units application. This dual
backup system greatly enhance its durability and reliability.

evaporator
Shell and tube heat exchanger with large pipe diameter is used for evaporator and condenser, which has
higher tolerance on water quality. While the unit has stronger fouling resistant, inner groove copper tube are
used inside the shell and tube heat exchanger. This increase the effective heat transfer surface, inducing
turbulent flow to delay fouling formation and increasing thermal efficiency at the same time. A sets of electronic
expansion valve is used for precision throttling. This dynamic throttling is vital when the water temperature
condition changes, the unit still able to maintain it target superheat. Thus, increasing reliability and efficiency
of the unit.

Service life balancing

A5MWC-BR series have build in compressor service life balancing. Where compressor with the least operation
time will be started first. This feature is carried across units in multiple units application.

Self-protection and diagnosis function

The unit come with self diagnosis and protection feature, utilizing arrays of build in sensors and switches.
When system falls into abnormality, error code will be display on the acousto-optic or wired controller.

A5MWC-BR series have smaller carbon foot print compare to its air cooled counterpart. Making it easier to be
transport around without the needs of hoist or crane. This is important especially for replacement project.

3
Robust Casing
The casing is coated and made from galvanized steel, making it very robust in normal weather condition. By
enclosing the whole unit, noise level of 56 dB(A) can be achieve, which is well below hazard level.

Zoning Capabilities
Units in different areas and floors can be control separately, such is the advantages of using chilled water
system compare to conventional centralize direct expansion system.

Simultaneous Operation & Wide Operating Temperature

Using the heat recovery models, a system that required cooling and heating operation can be achieve. Besides
utilizing the waste heat energy generated from air conditioning, the unit have a wider operating temperature
range.

Wide Selection of Units

Acson A5MWC-BR series consist of 20 ~ 40 tonnage cooling/heating capacity. Having a wide selection of units
enable flexibility in design. One can opt for lower carbon foot print by using larger unit or multiple smaller units
for better part loading capabilities.

Modular Capabilities
A5MWC-BR series can be setup up to 16 units for a single system. Making it very ideal for future expansion
project.

Heat Recovery (Optional) .

A5MWC030BR can be fitted with a heater so that it can provide heating and hot water simultaneously.

Free Hot Water

For the heat recovery model, the temperature of the condenser can reach up to 55˚C. Since air conditioning is
almost a must in our climate, we are literally providing hot water for free.

Installing chiller

If the unit is installed in a place where it snows in winter,

proper measures better be taken to protect the unit against
snow and ensure that the unit works properly.
Avoid installing the unit at places that are dirty, oily, high
salt concentration, and/or filled with flammable gas is
strictly not allow.

The groundwork should be made of concrete or supporting

structures. While designing the groundwork, the strength of
the floor, water discharge (the unit discharge water while
working), pipeline and wiring need to be considered
Secure the chiller properly by using anchor bolt so that it will Rubber cushions
not fall off in case of strong wind or earthquakes. The unit is Qty 4
advised to installed in a place such that it will not directly
exposed to the weather. Size 280X180X20

Depending on mounting conditions, operation vibration might pass UNIT: mm

lls.
Therefore, proper vibration dampening mechanisms (such as
bumper cushion, bumper frame etc.) should be in place.

Corners and edges should be properly installed. Otherwise, the unit

might get unbalanced and cause the grounding pins to bend. The
unit might fall off and cause bodily injuries if it is not properly installed.

21
Hoisting The Chiller
Please hoist the unit according to the following illustrations. Tie the cables to the four corners of the unit while
moving it. If you tie the cables to only three corners of the unit, the unit might get unbalanced and fall off.

PROTECTIVE CUSHION

HOISTING CABLE (TWO)

Note:
■ Chilled water units must be moved with great care.
■ Accessory strips and/or strapping tapes that come with the unit is not for hoisting purposes.
Any attempt to use it to move the unit might break and cause accidents.
■ Dispose all plastic bags properly and keep them away from children.

Water System Installation
Water quality requirements

Water inside the chilled water system must be clean/soft to prevent formation of scale. Scaling/fouling will degrade
performance of the chiller and increase resistance. This will eventually affects both the flow rate and performance of the
water pumps. The concentration of foreign elements should be kept to minimum, the characteristic of the water should be
as follow:

Connecting water pipes

■ Water pump is field supply. Sizing of the water pump is important to overcome resistance of the water pipes
■ Water pressure gauges and thermocouples/thermistor must be installed at the water inlets and outlets to facilitate the
reading of unit operation status.
■ The heat exchanger at the water side is made of stainless steel. Water scale may accumulate depends on the water
quality and must be cleaned using chemicals from time to time. Therefore, a chemical cleaning pipe connector needs

■ Ensure the flow rate is in the range. Low flow rate will reduce performance of the unit due to scale formation, triggering
anti-freeze sensor, and/or refrigerant leakages which caused by corrosion. While flow rate that is too high will cause
erosion corrosion.
■ A adiabatic water tank with a proper volume is recommended to be installed. If the capacity is too small, the unit might
frequently restart, which causes wear and tear on the compressor.
■ An expansion tank is recommended to be install at the return of the chilled water system. Water inside the chilled water
system will experience volume changes due to temperature changes.
■ An auto relief valve must be installed at the highest point in the water system. A suitable water discharge valve must
be installed at the lowest point in the water system.
■ The water pipes must be adiabatic to avoid heat loss and condensate water.
■ Please follow the "Illustration for water system installation" and drawings from the certified personnel while installing the
water system.
■ Install the strainer on the inlet pipe and rinse the filter screen after commissioning.
■ Before supplying water, make sure that no sand, rubble, rust, soldering tin residue or other impurities exist in the pipe,
as these things might damage the heat exchanger.
■ While rinsing the water system, please bypass the unit and the terminal heat exchanger using by-pass valves.

2. Install one electric two-way valve at the outlet of each slave unit to implement the interworking with the unit.
3. Install one electric two-way valve in each piece of terminal equipment to implement the interworking

For details about wiring, please refer to the instruction to fan coil unit.)
4. At least one variable-frequency water pump is required to serve as the chilled water pump for the
water system (it is recommended to use variable-frequency water pumps only to simplify the control

pressure. Adopt variable-speed water pump and install transducer to implement variable frequency.
5. Install the differential pressure sensor ∆P between the main pipes for chilled water supply and return. The
location is shown in the schematic diagram of the water system. Check the difference between the chilled
water supply pressure and return pressure, and transmit the signal of pressure difference change to the
variable-frequency water pump, so as to change the speed of the variable frequency water pump and

5.1

5.2 Requirement for flow rate changes: the rate of which the flow rate is changed cannot be too frequent.
Otherwise, the stability of outlet temperature and terminal regulating valve will be affected. It i
recommended to fix the flow rate changes to 2% ~ 30% per minute, the specific value varies depends on
the model, control, and cycle time of water in the system. The optimum rate for flow rate changes shall
be determined on site after debugging, and the adjustment rate of 10% per minute could be use as the
initial value for system debugging.

6. In the wiring diagram that are shown previously, components such as contactors and terminal block can
be seen. It was meant for constant flow rate system, a variable flow rate system will require frequency
converter, DDC, differential pressure sensors and other components that might be needed in a variable
flow rate system. Core components that make a variable flow rate differ than the constant flow rate
system are as follow:

Component Function
Electric two-way valve Terminal side, interworking with the terminal
Electric two-way valve Unit side, interworking with the unit
Frequency converter Implementing water pump variable frequency
Differential pressure sensor Checking pressure difference between water supply and water return, and
controlling water pump adjustment
DDC Direct digital controller

26
Interfaces implementing the preceding functions are preserved on the unit. For details about wiring, please
refer to "Control System Instruction - PCB instruction".

The water pump

and fan can be equipped with relevant unit correspondingly by group. When all corresponding units stop,
the water pumps and fans stop; when one of the corresponding units starts, the water pump and fan starts
before the unit startup. The water pump and fan can be connected to the unit to implement interworking.

The water system with separate pumps for each unit is applicable only to the scenario where a few units are used (that is,
one or two units). When the quantity of units is large, it is not recommended to use this type of water system. Because:
1. Separate pumps for each unit are not cost-effective when there are many units;
2. The water flow rate in the system might be too low, which can affect the unit performance. For example, for a group of 10
units with 200 terminals connected. In the case of low load, if only one unit and all terminals are running. The water flow rate
in the system will be too low and performance of the system will be affected.
Application instruction:

2. Install electric two-way valve on the terminal side to implement the interworking between the electric two-way valve and
the terminal.

27
3. For chilled water system on the unit user side, install an independent water pump for each unit and configure interworking
between the water pump and the unit. Install electric two-way valve on each slave unit to implement the interworking
between the electronic two-way valve and the unit.
4. For the hot water system on the unit heat source side, install an independent water pump for each unit, and configure
interworking between the water pump, cooling tower and the unit. Install electric two-way valve on each slave unit
to implement the interworking between the electronic two-way valve and the unit.
Interfaces implementing the preceding functions are preserved on the master unit. For details about wiring, please refer to
"Control System Instruction - PCB instruction".

Note:
1. When cleaning the water system, close all the gate valves as shown in position 1 2 or 3 4 . Open the 5 or
6 valve to bypass the units to avoid foreign matters in water system entering the plate of units, which may

2. Adopt the reversed return system in hydraulic system when two more units are combined. If the direct return

Hydraulic calculation and pipe system
Pipe design for the air-conditioning system
■ Please ensure the piping for both condenser and chilled water system is sufficient. For example, the water system

that the unit works properly.

■ Deploy pipes properly, use pipes with reverse return if possible. Although the initial investment is increased, the
flow rate will be more stable. If pipes have no reverse return design, pressure between branch pipes must
be balanced in the design process.
■ When determining the diameters of pipes, ensure it is suitable for that flow rate as such the resistance, noise and
performance of the unit is optimum.A larger water pipe will require higher initial investment but lower flow resistance
and smaller pump could be use, lowering operating cost. It is crucial to find a pipe diameter that balance between
investment and operation cost. Avoid a large water flow with small temperature variation to ensure that the pipe system
.
is economical.
■ In the design process, calculate water resistance accurately to ensure that water pressures between circuits are well
balanced and that the air conditioning system works with the best water and thermal conditions.
■ The pipe system of an air conditioning system must meet the adjustment requirements for partial workload.
■ The pipe system of an air conditioning system should use energy saving technologies whenever possible.
■ Pipes and accessories of the pipe system must meet the related requirements.
■ The design of the pipe system must facilitate maintenance, operation, and adjustment.

* Determining the diameter of pipes in the air conditioning system

The pipe diameter is determined based on the following:

4 mw
d =
3.14v
3
mw /s
v = water speed m/s

The water speed should be determined by the recommendations in

Note:
1. The total water volume of the entire hydraulic system includes the water in main pipe, water tank
and terminal equipments, in which the 2-way valve is open.
2. If the water volume (V) while the unit is running is less than Vmin, it's recommended to install a water
tank of (Vmin-V)L, or it will cause the unit frequent ON/OFF.
3. The Vmin in the table is calculated based on nominal cooling water flow rate and 5ºC anti-freeze. If the
the water flow rate and anti-freeze temperature change, relative V min will change.
4. Above table is valid for nominal operating condition and not meant for application with addition of glycol.

Example: Calculating system water volume.

A project require one unit of A5MWC030BR-FAAE,, the desired water return temperature is 12°C,
main water pipe size is 2-1/2”(DN65), total length of main water inlet/outlet pipes is 50 m, 10 units of fan
coils are normally open, and internal volumes for each fan coils
. are 1.5 L.
Volume of terminal fan coils =10*1.5=15 L.
According to the table above, Vmin.=296 L.
To avoid frequent unit startup/shutdown and alarms, the volume of the water tank should be no less than
Vmin.-V=296-166-15=115 L.

An expansion water tank with a proper volume must be installed to adapt to water volume changes as the
temperature change. Thus, an expansion tank must be installed at the inlet of the chilled water pump to avoid
freezing burst and/or pressure instability. The expansion water tank can also be used to supplement water
and discharge air. Formula for calculating the volume of expansion water tank.

V P =α × ∆t × Vs
Vp: effective volume of the expansion water tank (volume of water between the signal pipe and the
3

α:
t: max. water temperature variation °C.
Vs: water volume in the system (total water volume in the system and pipes) m3

Selection principles for water pump

Closed water circulation system: Water circulation pump lift ≥ (Pipe resistance of the water system + Partial
resistance of the water system + Water pressure drop of the unit) × 1.1
Open water circulation system: Water circulation pump lift ≥(Static resistance of the water system + Pipe
resistance of the water system + Partial resistance of the water system + Water pressure drop of the unit) × 1.1
In the case that multiple units share the same pump, the pump lift is calculated according to the circuit that
has the maximum resistance (usually the unit that is farthest away from the pump).

Note: The water flow rate of the unit should calculate according the water flow range.

Commissioning and Operation

Note: Before the commissioning, check that

the following conditions are met and read
the "Safety Precautions" again.

■ Ensure that the water pump and the unit are connected.
Use the PCB controller to switch On and off the pump so that it could cut off the system in the event of
abnormalities. Otherwise, BPHE may crack due to freezing.
The water pump connection point must have no voltage. If a voltage circuit is connected, basic components
may be damaged.
■ Power on the unit to preheat the crankcase for at least 12 hours before starting up the unit for the
.
■ .
. Fill , and
discharge free air in the system.
■ Wiring of the unit: Check that the diameter of the wires meets requirements. The wires are correctly
connected. The grounding line is securely connected;
■ Before turning on the unit, clean the water system and ensure that pipes are clean and free from
contaminants.
■ Make sure that the working conditions do not exceed the rated working range.

Items to be checked during the commissioning

Check the following items after the unit operation has stabilized for a period of time:

S/N Item Checking Method Reference Standard

1 Power supply voltage Voltage Rated voltage±10%
2 Working current of a single compressor Current 13 - 25A
3 Difference between EWT and LWT of evaporator Temperature 2 - 7ºC
4 Difference between EWT and LWT of condenser Temperature 2 - 10ºC
5 Discharge temperature of the compressor Temperature 40 -115ºC
6 Low pressure during operation Pressure 6.9 - 10.0bar
7 High pressure during operation Pressure 13.0 - 29.0bar

Note: The reference standards are used to check whether a unit works properly onsite. Reference standards
are determined based on the maximum and minimum working conditions. If the readings obtained from site
exceed the value stated above, please contact ACSON or its authorized dealer.

Maintenance
Repair

Although the unit go through stringent

Note: Before checking and maintaining the quality and performance test. The unit
unit, safety precautions need to be adhere. must be maintained from time to time.

The unit can only be repaired and serviced by specially-trained technicians. After a unit is serviced, safety
controls must be checked and analyzed before the unit is turned on.

Items to be checked periodically

■ Clean the shell and tube heat exchanger periodically.

To optimize the efficiency of the shell and tube heat exchanger, please clean it periodically.

■ Check the status of the chilled water from time to time.

Discharge water by loosening the air or water discharge plug.
If the water quality degrades, replace water in the system timely.
Contaminated water can degrade the cooling capacity and corrode the heat exchanger and water pipes.
■ Check whether free air exists in the water pipe system.
Free air may get into the system even during the air discharging process. Discharge air from time to time.
■ Clean the strainer in the water system periodically.
■ Replenishing refrigerant and lubricant.
Each unit is pre-charged with refrigerant and lubricant prior of delivery..
If the system operates smoothly, customers neither need nor are allowed to replenish or change the
refrigerant or lubricant.

Water processing method
To ensure effective operation and durability. Cleaning, washing and chemical processing are very important for
water systems. Different types of water circuits need to be cleaned in different ways.
■ Close re-circulation system.
Water systems of this type generally require no adjustment to subdue scale and require no chemical to suppress
mud and alga. This type of water system is recommended. Closed recycle systems may need anti-corrosion
measures, including the following (for reference only):
NaNO2, borate and inhibitors for organic materials.
a. NaNO2, borate and silicate.
b. High density chromate solution and pH control.

d. Polyphosphate salt and silicate.

Because it is hard to control water quality for closed recycle systems, we recommend that the total density of
copper pipe inhibitors such as NaNO2, borax, silicate and benzothiazole should be no less than 1400 ppm. The
inhibitor NaNO2 is soluble in glycol, and can be used in northern areas or in the subsystem of solar power systems.
■ Open re-circulation system.
This type of water system is generally not recommended. They are exposed to the atmosphere, and are susceptible to
scale, corrosion, mud and alga. Therefore, they might degrade the performance and reduce the service life of the unit.
■ Once-through system.
Generally, once-through systems are only used for cooling only air conditioners. Water systems of this type use
water from taps, lakes, rivers, and wells. Although the once-through system exchanges heat with the closed
water circuit, it is not considered as an integral part of the water source heat pump system. Once-through
systems may be troubled by either scale or corrosion. This type of water system requires large amount of

and necessary anti-corrosion materials.

■ Cleaning of the shell and tube heat exchanger.

1. Clean the shell and tube heat exchanger based on the condition of site. Clean the shell and tube heat exchanger
by removing the cover for water pipes opposite side. Then use a brush to clean the tubes.
2. For open recycle system, please clean the cooling tower periodically.
3. High operating pressure might caused by the following items beside heat exchanger being dirty or scale formation:
Charging too much refrigerant.
Air in the system.
Water regulation valve setting problem or breakdown.
EWT of shell and tube heat exchanger too high.
