MEANING OF PRAGMATISM
The term pragmatism has been derived from the
greek word “PRAGMA”which means “ACTION”.The
word like practice and practical have been derived
from it.It was first introduced by charles sender
pierce in 1878,in his essay –”HOW TO MAKE OUR
IDEAS CLEAR”.He is the founder of pragmatism
attached idealism and refined truth and knowledge
in terms of experience.
“Pragmatism offers us a theory of meaning ,a theory
of truth, a theory of knowledge and a theory of
reality “_WILLAM JAMES
ARNOLD says ,“pragmatism means activity
commentment and encounter”.

• An experimental pragmatist belives,whatever can be
experimentally verified is true.
• BIOLOGICAL PRAGMATISM
A Biological pragmatism believes that by this type of
pragmatism best is found in the function of thought
in adopt the human organism to its environment.
It can be explained as;
Education should enable the child to learn new
techniques to cope with new situations
Values are created through experimentation.
Child learns by doing more than by reflection.
Education is a continuous process.Education is a
constant recorganising or reconstruction of experience.
Educational practices have to be experimental.
Curriculam is activity centered.
Curriculum is integrated.
education is a social necessity.It is the means by which
it renews itself.
Life situations should be made the basis of education.
Pragmatism as a well recognised school of philosophy has
multiple dimensions, its Metaphysics,its epistemology, and its
Axiology.
Metaphysics deals with the world beyond the
nature.The metaphysics of pragmatism belives that reality is a
constant flux and the world is an unfinished product.
Epistemology deals with the problems of knowledge
and truth.to a pragmatist,sheer facts do not constitue
Knowledge;knowledge is a process of
experimentation.so,knowledge is unchangeable sort which is
always true.
Axiology deals with the study of values,in pragmatism, the
study of value is also a matter of experience.pragmatism have
no faith in standard,permanent and eternal values.values are
obtained from society and are changing.
EDUCATIONAL IMPLEMENTATION IN
PRAGMATISM
PRAGMATISM AND AIM OF EDUCATION
Prgamitism do not believe in any preconceived aim of
education.They believed that there are no fixed aims or values of
life.Our value go on changing with the change of time and with
the change of huma experiences.pragamatism respects the
individuality of the child and so much is left to the individual some
of the aims suggested by pragmatism are :
1. NATURAL DEVELOPMENT:The natural
development include development of the physique
and mind besides,the child must be develop
socially,morally and aesthetically.
2. SOCIAL EFFICIENCY:Another aim of this
education is to produce socially efficent
persons.socail effeciency includes economic and
cultural effeciency.
3. HORMONIC DEVELOPMENT:Pragmatists do
not believe in spiritual values but they do not ignore
the harmonious development of man i,e
physical,social,moral,intellectual aesthetic etc.
Pragmatism and curriculm
PRINCIPAL OF UTILITY:This principle implies that only
those subjects should be included in the curriculam which
should got utility and usefulness in life.e.g language,pysical
training and geography etc.
 PRINCIPAL OF CHILD INTEREST:Curriculum should be
governed by child natural interest and aptitutes.
Pragmatism and methods of teaching
The teacher must understand the child,his desires,purposes
and interest and inclinations.
The pragmatist pay stress on “Activity in learning”rather than
on theory alone.Theory without practice is meaningless .
PRAGMATISM AND CONCEPT OF
DISCILINE
In pragmatism there is no place for rewards and
punishments,as every activity is pursued in
social setting,where all the members are
equal.
PRAGMATISM AND ROLE OF
TEACHER
In pragmatic education there is no spoon feeding.Much stress is
placed on action rather than reflection.He must help the
students in solving the problem.

Pragmatism is a philosophy that encourages to
seek out a process and do thingd that works
best to achieve the end supports creating
new ideas to deal with the changing world.
