English II

In “By Any Other Name” by Santha Rama Rau, the headmistress changes the girls names
because she thinks they are complex, this makes Santha feel like she has to be someone else.
In the story the mistress says, “Oh my dears, those are much too hard for me. Suppose we give
you pretty English names.” Also the speaker says, “I don’t know” whe she is asked her name, as
if she is conflicted. This shows that this made the speaker feel confused as to who she really is,
she could not figure out how to describe herself as a person. Then, the author says “I was so
pleased to be home and have left that peculiar Cynthia behind” as if she was tired of going to
school and pretending to be someone she is not, thus making her feel frustrated and
cheerlessness. This shows that the speaker was tired of going to school and fighting between
two dual personalities everyday, she had to go to school and act like she is someone else
because the headmistress and faculty renamed her and labeled her. Overall, the way she was
treated at the school by the faculty and the headmistress made her feel torn between two
worlds.
