5E lesson plan

Fourth Grade
Dayton Duffy
Pre - assessment
Students will be put into groups of 3-4. I will pass out a
stack of cards with shapes on them. The shapes will either
have their borders outlined or they will be filled in. The
students must separate the shapes into 2 columns of
either area or perimeter based on their previous
knowledge of the subject.

The students should already have previous knowledge of

area and perimeter form second grade lessons. I will
determine their level of knowledge by seeing how well
they seperate the cards.

Engage
Grade: 4th
Length: 5 minutes
Materials: whiteboard and dry erase marker
Technology: none
Essential questions:Do the questions make sense when you plug
in the numbers? Do you have to use the formula exactly how it is
or are there other ways to solve?
TEKS:solve problems related to perimeter and area of rectangles
where dimensions are whole numbers
Kagan Strategy: Class will walk around and then pair up when I
say so to discuss the question on the board: What is the
difference between area and perimeter of a shape?Students will
join together on the carpet. Introduce the topic and ask
students if they remember the area and perimeter formulas
learned in 2nd grade. Once equations are on the board, have
students solve a few practice problems on their boards. 3
Explore
Grade: 4th
Length: 5 minutes
Materials: math journals, pencil
Technology: projector for google slides
Essential questions:Why are we learning to find area and perimeter?
How can it be used in the real world?
TEKS:use models to determine the formulas for the perimeter of a
rectangle (l + w + l + w or 2l + 2w), including the special form for
perimeter of a square (4s) and the area of a rectangle (l x w);
Students will listen to and record new math vocabulary in their
journals. As a class, we will discuss why area and perimeter are
important.
Kagan Startegy- Have students get in groups of 4 and jot down ideas
of what they rememebr from area and perimter after viewing voabulary

Explain
Grade: 4th
Length: 15 minutes
Materials: worksheets
Technology: none
Essential questions:How did you find this width or length? How
did you know this number belongs here on the shape?
TEKS:solve problems related to perimeter and area of
rectangles where dimensions are whole numbers.
Students will solve problems with a group and share ideas
on different ways to solve.

5
Elaborate
Grade: 4th
Length: 12 minutes
Materials: Worksheets, dry erase markers
Technology: none
Essential questions: Now that we know how to solve, when
would we have to use these formulas in real life?
TEKS:solve problems related to perimeter and area of
rectangles where dimensions are whole numbers.
Students will use their gained knowledge to complete an
individual assignment.

6
Evaluation
Grade: 4th
Length: 15 minutes
Materials: ipads
Technology: ipads
Essential questions: Using your knowledge, how can you
create your own shape and real world problem?
TEKS:use models to determine the formulas for the
perimeter of a rectangle (l + w + l + w or 2l + 2w)
Students will be placed in partners to create their own real
world problem using the seesaw app on the ipads. Students
will add a voice-over describing their problem and how to
solve it.
