Prior Knowledge
 In previous classes you probably learned that you could analyze data to make predictions.
 This is called “Data Analysis”. For example, data analysis can help us predict who will become president of the United States!
 Maybe your mom or dad has even participated in a poll.
 This leads us into today’s lesson…

Anticipatory Set
 But, before we get started I would like to play a little song for you.
 My brother-in-law has been doing a little singing. He wrote me a song to help introduce today’s lesson!
 Now, we all know that Mr. Todd CAN write some good songs.
He did write the “Keep, Change, Flip” song; however he just CAN’T sing them very well.
 I would like for you to listen to the song.
As you are listening, I want you to try and figure out what this crazy song has to do with math! Play”short” version of song.
 Call on students to share their answers. Don’t confirm any answers. Just say maybe, or good answer.
 Say… “Now I’d like to pass out the lyrics to the song and we’ll re-listen to the song.
 This version is a little different… “So listen for the hints to see if you were right!” Play “long” version of song.
 Say… “If you haven’t guessed… Today we will be learning about Median, Mean, Mode, and Range”.
 Let’s start with the Mean…

 Discuss mean and its use in finding averages on a report card.

 Demonstrate how to calculate the mean.
 Discuss median.
 Show picture of Destiny’s Child. Point out Beyonce in the middle. How do I know Beyonce is in the middle?
 Well, there is one person on each side of Beyonce, leaving her in the middle!
 Show picture of Original Destiny’s Child with the 4th member. Now, who’s in the middle?
 Students will say… there are two girls in the middle!
 Demonstrate how to find the median.
 Discuss mode and how it is used to determine how to fill a vending machine.
 Demonstrate how to determine the mode.
 Notice… there are more “1’s” than any other number.
 Discuss range and how it is used with temperatures.
 Demonstrate how to calculate the range.
 Allow students to do you try problem.

You must average the two middle numbers by adding them together, then dividing by 2.

Measures of Central Tendencies

Mean = Average
Is the sum of the numbers in the data set divided by how many numbers are in the set.

Example: 2, 3, 1, 1, 0, 1, 2, 4
Step 1: 2 + 3 + 1 + 1 + 0 + 1 + 2 + 4 = 14
Step 2: 14 ÷ 8 = _______ Mean

Median = Middle
Is the middle number in the data set arranged in order by value. If there are 2 middle numbers,
find the average of the 2 middle numbers and that will be the median.

Example: 2, 3, 1, 1, 0, 1, 2, 4
Order the numbers: 0, 1, 1, 1, 2, 2, 3, 4

There are two middle numbers. 1+2=3

3 ÷ 2 = _______ Median

Mode = Most
It is the number that occurs the most often in a dataset.
Example: 2, 3, 1, 1, 0, 1, 2, 4
Mode = _______

Range = Biggest - Smallest

The range is not a measure of central tendency; however it is a very useful way to describe data!
The range describes the spread of the data. It is the difference between the highest and lowest
data value in a set of numbers.

Example: 2, 3, 1, 1, 0, 1, 2, 4 4 – 0 = _______ Range
