HIGHLY IMMERSIVE PROGRAMME (HIP)

ACTIVITY: Morning Studies

TYPE OF ACTIVITY: In-Class Activity

SCHOOL: Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina Kuang Yah, Melaka.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Phonics/ Languange Art


Listening, Speaking, and Reading Skills.

AIMS: 1. To improve vocabulary and reading skills.


2. To provide opportunities for students to learn English
language before school.
3. To develop a fun learning atmosphere for English language.
4. To provide exposure to coreect pronounciation.

TIME/DURATION: 20 minutes.

MATERIALS: APPENDIX 1: Samples of the books.

DESCRIPTION: This activity is carried out every Tuesday from 7.25 a.m. to 7.45
a.m. The whole school is involved in this activity. The English
teacher plans an activity for each level/ standard. The activities will
help to create a less threatening environment as well as to increase
the students’ motivation to learn. The activities can be based on
the theme and topic taken from the textbooks.

STUDENT OUTCOMES: Students will be able to:


1. Enhance their vocabulary, grammar and reading skills
2. Use the English language confidently.
3. Understand the flow of events in the story.
4. Sing songs with correct rhythm, stress and intonation.
5. Demonstrate correct actions to match the phonics.
STEPS FOR IMPLEMENTATION:
1. The morning studies will be held on every Tuesday.
(7.25 p.m. – 7.45 p.m.)
2. Class of Year 1 conducts by Miss Chua Elaine, class of Year 2,
Year 3 and Year 6 conducts by Madam Koo Sin Yee whereas
class of Year 4 and Year 5 conducts by Miss Low Say Yee.
3. Phonics –The teacher asks students to watch the Jolly Phonics
video. The teacher demonstrate the action on each phonics.
Students rehearse the song together with the actions. The
students are required to perform the action spontaneously when
they come across the phonics.
4. Nursery Rhymes – Teacher read the nursey rhymes aloud
follow by the students. Nursery rhymes are conducive to
reciting again and again. After students knows the nursery
rhymes, let them fill in the rhyming words. Play hand clapping
games with the students and last but not least, sing the
rhyming action songs.
5. Poems / Stories – To do choral reading, teacher and the
students read together as a group. Students read at the same
pace and with the same phrasing and intonation as the rest of
the group. In echo reading, teacher read a line and students
then repeat it, echoing teacher’s expression, tone and pacing.
The teacher discusses the plot, characters and the theme with
the students. Students are put into groups and are assigned
sections of the story to role play.
6. Songs – The teacher selects a suitable video. Students watch
the video. The teacher highlights some words in the song which
she wants to focus on. Students are required to demonstrate
the correct action for the word chosen. The students rehearse
the song together with the actions.
