Motec - Company profile

Security with system

“Safety first” – a basic guiding principle for nearly all manufacturers of vehicles and machines.
However, the full potential of visual assistance systems cannot be tapped unless all compo-
nents are adapted to their conditions of usage in the relevant vehicle and are interacting opti-
mally. Motec has specialised in this area.

In Europe Motec is among the leading providers of flexible and

powerful camera systems. Since 1992 we have been developing and
producing cameras, monitors, radio and control units as well as
cables and plugs for challenging industrial and municipal applica-
tions.

With more than 70 employees, our owner-managed company specialises in small and medium-
size series. Motec is a reliable partner in great demand as a supplier of original equipment. In-
tegrated systems combining camera technology and sensors systems together are typical of our
application and market oriented development work. With our close-knit network of cooperating
regional commerce partners, we ensure fast and reliable supply of our customers in Germany
and Europe.

Tailored solutions

Custom solutions for every type of vehicle and machine

As a medium-size, owner-managed company, we respond directly to our customers’ needs. Flat hierar-
chies with short and direct lines of communication between Sales, Development, Production and our
suppliers are the basis for flexible customised solutions. Solutions that extend beyond standard require-
ments to meet the highest needs. In short, quality on all levels.

Special vehicles for security use –

modifications to standard components
Motec has adapted its components to special requirements for well known manufacturers of armoured and
off-road utility and transport vehicles. Adaptive features range from special paint to protective cables and
reinforced plugs. Starting with standard commercial components, for example parts used in freight traffic, and
working closely with manufacturers, we have developed a series of advanced customised products optimally
suited to the specific requirements of selected types of high-tech vehicles. In addition to supplying individual
components, Motec equips vehicles with complete systems in the factory as an OEM partner.

Slag processing – seeing clearly through the mist

Narrow travelways, dense fog and up to 70 tonnes of hot freight – transporting slag out of the steel production
facility in the Salzgitter plant demands maximum concentration from drivers of the Erich Friedrich GmbH. The
biggest problem is the dense clouds of fog caused by tipping slag as it cools off from temperatures of up to
1400 degrees Celsius.

The PathFindIR thermal imaging camera opens a line of

sight through the wall of steam that is impenetrable to the
naked eye. The camera, produced by US manufacturer FLIR,
is distributed exclusively in Germany by Motec. Drivers see
the outlines of buildings and persons in infrared from their
operator’s station, giving them reliable orientation in the
thick clouds of fog.

Another problem is the danger when tipping loads that

sparks from the slag could strike the tyres, which could set
them on fire. To allow drivers to respond quickly in case of
danger and activate the extinguishing system, a camera on
the bottom of the vehicle monitors the rear axle. The view
from this camera appears automatically as soon as the ve-
hicle starts to move in reverse to the edge of the slag pool.
With a field viewing angle of 90 degrees, it monitors the
entire width of the vehicle. A third camera provides images
of the side of the vehicle facing away from the operator’s
station.
Project profile
In conclusion, three cameras specially adapted for this Camera system for slag transporter
application allow drivers to see exactly what they need
to when transporting slag safely in on-site conditions. In Thermal image camera page 43

Flexible connection
Motec cameras can be connected to any data terminal

Today’s agriculture really is high-tech. State-of-the-art

ISUBUS terminals have long become standard equip-
ment for haulers, combines or harvesters. The problem:
on-board equipment usually lacks compatibility with
external components. Many data terminals have a video
interface for direct connection of an on-board network
camera. That is insufficient for a demanding system solu-
tion with two or more cameras. The power supply is ano-
ther obstacle since the terminals are not able to provide
a constant 12V power supply for the camera. However
Motec cameras can be connected to almost any standard
solution, regardless of manufacturer, design type or in-
terfaces.

Individual cable assembly

At Motec, we have our own cable manufacturing and
assembly. Cable sets and connectors can thus be ideally
adapted to the terminals of any combination of tractor/
accessories.

Flexible components
A Motec control box is connected to the terminal video
input. This system allows users to connect and to control up
to four cameras. The box provides not only camera switch-
over, but also automatic trailer detection or an indicator-
controlled lateral camera. It also offers a split function so
that up to four images can be displayed on the monitor
simultaneously.

Reliable power supply

In case of direct connection, the terminal e.g. provides
power to the camera. For an ideal connection, cables and
connectors are also individually assembled.

is activated. that monitors the right side of the vehicle is activated. Indi-
cator mode also ensures a constant power supply and thus
a continuous camera image.

Autofocus
For camera models of the MC5000 series, the autofocus
function controls image sharpness during zooming practi- Blooming
cally in real time. An important feature for use on cranes. Blooming refers to a section that fades out due to especially
bright, overexposed image points. The effect occurs most of-
ten in older cameras (-> CCD sensor) because the individual ->
pixels of a CCD sensor are only able to absorb a limited amount
of charge. If an image element is too strongly illuminated,
this charge quantity is exceeded and the cell gives off the
Image mirroring superfluous charges to adjacent cells.
A person who is standing to the right of the vehicle, for ex-
ample, is also seen on the right side of the monitor. Without
image mirroring the display would be inverted side for side.
This function helps the driver by providing a realistic image
of the area around the vehicle on the monitor. Some Motec
monitors and cameras mirror images automatically. CCD
CCD sensors are electronic components that are sensitive to
light. Due to their great sensitivity they are able to monitor
areas with very weak light as well as very bright areas.

CMOS
CMOS sensors can be used to produce sharp images rich in
contrast with back light and rapidly changing light condi-
tions. The light is converted by transistors located directly
on the pixels. Since each pixel is directly activated, -> pixel
binning is simpler.
Field viewing angle (horizontal)
As a general rule, the larger the field viewing angle, the
greater the area that is covered by the camera. Large field
viewing angles (> 90°) are suitable for monitoring area that

this means that the cameras are able to withstand water
pressures of from 80 to 100 bar (->High-pressure cleaners).

Pin-hole
An especially small objective opening on Motec fork arm
cameras. The diameter is just a few millimetres. Fork arm
cameras are mounted on the inside of the fork and are
therefore exposed to high load levels. The comparatively
small opening, no larger than the head of a needle, protects
the camera and lens.

ISM band
ISM bands are frequency ranges used by high-frequency
devices in industry, science and medicine for wireless video
transmission, in wireless headsets and loudspeakers or in
W-LAN networks.

Pixels
Camera extension Pixel is an abbreviation of “picture element”. Individual

Pixel binning
Binning means classification or grouping. It refers to a tech-
nique used in image sensors (-> CCD). A number of pixels
are combined to form a larger pixel. The effect is to increase
photosensitivity while differences in brightness can be
compensated for more quickly. At the same time the image
resolution and image noise are reduced. Irradiation effects
(-> blooming) are restricted.
Ball joint
Mounting bracket for all monitor types; allows for
ergonomic, infinitely variable adjustment.

Luminosity (lx)
A measure of the intensity of illumination or brightness of a
specific surface.
If the same amount of light (lumens) is distributed over a
larger surface, the brightness of the surface decreases. In
contrast to the „true“ brightness of a lamp, the intensity of il-
lumination measures the brightness of the surface on which
light is radiated.

vehicle. For example, if the driver activates the reversing
indicator and manoeuvres onto a ramp in reverse, the rear
area camera is activated. This camera has a higher priority
than the one connected to the indicator that monitors the
side of the vehicle.

Impact resistance
Impact resistance (in g) indicates the maximum mechanical
impact at which the camera will still operate with no prob-
lems. The higher the value, the sturdier and more resistant
the camera’s response to impact, bumps or other mechani- Thermal image camera
cal effects. The thermal image camera PathFindIR from FLIR works with
an infrared detector. This technology allows the driver to see
people, animals or objects even in complete dark, smoke or
mist.
Split Screen
Split screen is a method used to show two or more images
at the same time. Images are usually divided into squares
with the same ratio between sides of the image.

Vibration resistance
An important quality features of a camera. In contrast to
-> Impact resistance, the vibration value indicates how the cam-
era behaves in case of long-term, regular and continuously
recurring vibrations such as vehicle vibrations or driving over
cobblestones. Constant vibrations can not only impair image
quality, but also damage electronics. The higher the value,
the better the camera is protected against vibrations.
