All About Independent Study
Mentorship

ISM is an advanced course in which a student receives mentorship

under a professional of a chosen field. The student is required to

● Shadow for three hours a week at his or her mentorship site

● Journal observations/experiences weekly
● Maintain an online portfolio
● Create a midterm and final presentation with a product.
Project Topic: Dental Ethics

● Dentistry is a field that holds great responsibility. A

code of ethics must be followed, and this presentation
examines what exactly those codes encompass.
● I was drawn to this subject because human morality
has always been a subject of interest for me, and I
wanted to explore it within the context of my future
career.
Patient Autonomy

● Patient Involvement

Ethical Dilemma
Tri-Fold

● The Tri-Fold presents 3 different hypothetical ethical dilemmas that a dentist could
encounter.
● Evaluators select which action they would take for each situation. After the evaluators
have answered, I will reveal the percentages of dentists that chose each option in each
situation. Each situation would be on a separate section of a Tri-Fold.
● I will collect and compile information regarding common dilemmas first, and after a 1-2
week(s) will gather statistical information about how dentists most often respond to
each. I will begin the physical construction process 1-2 week(s) prior to the due date.
Research

1. Ethical Dilemmas that aren’t easily answered by above points

2. Punishments for poor ethical behavior
3. Common ethical issues in dentistry

I want to incorporate my research into my key points. By

integrating it into my main points rather than placing them into a
seperate block, I make my evaluations more effective, and my
PowerPoint more streamlined.
Current Event
● My current event details an event in Orange County
where a dental clinic was found guilty of conducting
extremely unethical procedures on children.

● The Orange County incident serves as a reminder of

slippery a slope placing profit above people can be, and
demonstrates an extreme example of unethical
dentistry.
Conclusion

● Mentoring with Dr. Warwick gave me

a better understanding of the field of
dentistry, and I hope and believe that
it will continue to do so.
● From my project, I hope to gain a
solid understanding of what will be
expected from me from a moral
standpoint in the future.
Acknowledgements

● I’d like to start off by giving a big thank you to my mentor, Dr.
Warwick, for letting me shadow and being a better mentor than I
ever expected.
● Thank you to all the great people back at the office for your
kindness and patience.
● Thank you to all the graders for taking the time out of your day
to come here for me.
● And of course, thank you to Ms. Click, for guiding me through
this and letting me into the program in the first place.
