Department of Electrical Engineering

University of Gujrat, Hafiz Hayat Campus

Course Name : Power Electronics

Course Code : EE-371

Course Type : Core Course

Semester Offered :8

Teaching Faculty : Prof. Dr. Shahid Iqbal

Lecture Hours :3

The course is designed to introduce students to the fundamentals of power

electronics. The course may be divided in to three parts. In first part of the
course, students would learn the basics of power semiconductor switches
which are used in power electronic systems to perform the switching
action. The second part of the course covers the fundamental power
electronic converters which are also known as such as ac-dc converters,
ac-ac converters, dc-dc converter and dc-ac inverters. These fundamental
Synopsis
power converters serve as the building blocks for bigger power electronic
systems. In the last part, students would learn about the development of
power electronic systems such as dc and ac power supplies by assembling
smaller units. As the course is introductory in nature, so to keep the
analysis and design of the power converters simple, it would be assumed
that all elements that make up power converters are ideal (lossless power
converters).

At the end of this course student should be able to:

CLO1: Graphically sketch the circuit diagrams of fundamental power

electronic systems and describe their function and operation with the aid
of typical steady state waveforms.

CLO2: Perform the steady state analysis of fundamental power electronic

systems leading to the development of mathematical equations that aid in
their design and performance evaluation.
