Problem-Based Lesson Plan ARTE 301

Title of Lesson: Planets

Teacher: Abigail Taylor
School: Prairieview Ogden South
Grade Level[s]: Kindergarten
Date to be Taught: 4/4/2019

Big Idea that drives Lesson/Unit:

Time is all around us. The seasons changing, is one way we can see time moving. The clocks on
the wall also let us know that time is happening. But time is not always the same everywhere.
Throughout history, time has been shown and measured in different ways. Different cultures
have different calendars. Time is not the same on Earth, as it is on Jupiter. There are many
interesting and strange ways that we see time work in our lives, and beyond.

Key concepts about Big Idea:

● Time is different on different planets
● The sun helps us measure time
● The seasons changing is shown by changes in weather
● Time can be measured in many ways, besides clocks
● Calendars are marked differently in different cultures
● Time influences artwork

Fine Arts Goals Met by the Objectives:

Cr1.1.K - Students who meet the standard will generate and conceptualize artistic ideas and work
and understand that creativity and innovative thinking are essential life skills that can be
developed.
A. Engage in exploration and imaginative play with materials.
Cr2.1.K Students who meet this standard will organize and develop artistic ideas and work.
a. Through experimentation, build skills in various media and approaches to artmaking
Cr2.3.K Students who meet this standard will organize and develop artistic ideas and work.
a. Create art that represents natural and constructed environments

3-4 Essential Questions:

 Is time the same on different planets?
● How do artists draw space?
● How can we draw something that has many different colors?

Problem-Based Lesson Plan ARTE 301

o Planets - rock or gas that moves around the sun or another star, has a rounded shape due
to gravity
o Solar System - Our local star, the Sun, and everything that circles around it is known as
the Solar System
o Blending – To mix more than one thing together, so that you can’t tell there is more than
one thing used.
o Space- besides planets, space means the area that something is in. It also has to do with
the how far apart things are from each other.

Key Artistic Concepts:

o Oil pastels
o Blending
o Creating different lines using pressure
o Space
Artmaking Materials Needed:
o 14 pieces of black paper
o Oil Pastels – 8 sets
o Presentation
o Moon sand
o Paper towels for wiping fingers

Contemporary/Historical/Multicultural exemplars:
o Howardena Pindell

o
Procedures:
o (40 minutes)
o Schedule [Agenda of day’s events] (2 minutes)
▪ First I will greet the class
▪ I will go over the project for the day and show an example
● Today I want us to learn about planets and how they are alike and
different than our planet Earth. After we look at some planets and
art, we are going to make our own art about planets. You will
make your own drawing of a planet that you like, or what you
think space looks like, even though we can’t really see it that well
from here.
o We’ll then listen and sing along to a song about the planets.

Problem-Based Lesson Plan ARTE 301

● Go to Discussion part
▪ If there’s time we’ll share what we made
o DISCUSSION (2 min)
o Before we begin drawing, I want us to talk about planets. What is a planet? A
planet is rock or gas that moves around the sun or another star, has a rounded
shape due to gravity.
▪ What are some planets that you can name? Do you know anything about
these planets?
▪ Would any of you go to a different planet if you could?
▪ What are some things you think you wouldn’t be able to do on another
planet? What are some things you think you could do on another planet
but not on earth?
o PRESENTATION (3 min)
o On a slideshow, I will show artist examples and information about planets.
▪ Show video about planets, photos of planets, and information about those
planets and how long their years are.
● A year on earth is how many days?
● The color of ___ planet is ?
● Do you think this is a planet? Is the Sun a planet?
▪ Facts about select planets and time on planets ( information taken from

Enchanted Learning)
● Earth- One day is 24 hours. A year is 365 days.

● Jupiter - One day on Jupiter is only 10 hours! It has the shortest

day of the planets. A year is the same as 4,300 days on Earth. It is
also so big, all the other planets could fit inside of it.

● Venus – Has the longest day. It is the same as 243 days on Earth.

● The planets are a part of what we call the Solar System. Our sun,
and everything that moves around it, is a part of the Solar System.

▪ Show slide of Howardena’s work without introducing the artist

3
Problem-Based Lesson Plan ARTE 301

● What planets do we think are in this piece of art?

● Do you like the colors she uses?
▪ This is a piece of art made by an artist named Howardena Pindell
● Howardena is a painter and uses many different kinds of art and
items in her work. She was born on this day in 1943. (April 4th)
● She has been making artwork for over 50 years and has been in
many museums.
● She’s a professor, so she teaches people about art!
● Her work can be abstract – meaning it is meant to represent
something real, but doesn’t always look real.
● She does lots of collages too, like we did when we were making art
about seasons.
● Her work is sometimes about space, people, and the things that
help us be better, kinder, and loving people.
o DEMONSTRATIONS: (5 minutes)
o Share my drawing and show what process I went through to determine what was
drawn
▪ I drew the planets ___,___,___. By looking at these images of space and
Howardena Pindells artwork, I was inspired to create my own images of
space. I see in this photo, that there are different colors in this planet.
There are ___, ___ and ___ colors. I blended these colors together using
this white oil pastel. Blending means that I combined all three colors by
moving them around with this other oil pastel. I can also use my finger to
blend, but I must be very careful not to get my clothes or my friends
messy. If you use your fingers you must make sure to wash them when
you are done.
o Demonstrate how to use oil pastels and the different techniques you can use with
them.
▪ I can blend with these to create the different colors that are in Jupiter
▪ I can make different marks – I can make a thick line, a thin line, and I can
make dots, so they look like stars.
o Show how space can be shown by using white oil pastels on a black piece of
paper, creates “stars”. The black paper shows how space is very big and a lot is
still not known about space. Space does always mean we are talking about
planets. Space also means the area that something is in, and how far things are
from each other. Using the white pastel to create stars, we are showing how far
apart these planets and stars are.
o We will be sharing the oil pastels, so make sure we are being kind and respectful
to our friends.
▪ These oil pastels can get messy! If they get on your fingers and you want
to wipe them off, please use the paper towels that will be at your desks.
Don’t rub your fingers on your clothes, or your face, or your friends!
▪ Don’t touch other people’s work, because it is very easy to get them
messy.
o DESIGN/WORK SESSION: (25 minutes)

Problem-Based Lesson Plan ARTE 301

o Now I will pass out the black pieces of paper and some oil pastels. Please remove
your name tags on put them in your desk. Remember that these oil pastels can get
messy. Don’t touch your face or clothes or your friends when you are using these.
When you get your paper please write your name on the back side, using a white
crayon.
▪ Can I have (student name) to please pass out the papers.
▪ Can I have (student name) pass out two boxes of oil pastels to each group.
▪ We will be sharing these with the people we are sitting with.
o You can look at the images on the board to inspire your drawing of space – the
colors in those pictures might be ones you want on your drawing.
o I want you to use more than one color to draw your planets and picture of space.
o With the remaining time when students are finished and areas are cleaned, we will
play with moon sand together at the big table.
▪ Since we finished up our drawings early, now we can pretend like we’re in
space. Today we’ll be on the moon, and we’ll play with moon sand. This
isn’t regular sand, this is special sand. When you mush the sand together,
it keeps it’s form longer than regular sand. You can make all kinds of
shapes with these, and then you can mush them back to sand. We will all
use this together at this big table. Sand will not be thrown, or moved from
this area. You will not walk with the sand, or touch anyone else’s area but
your own. You will work on top of a piece of paper and only that paper.
o While students are working, I will walk around and assist with the materials and
answer any questions they might have.
▪ I will also ask them what planets they’re drawing, if they’re enjoying the
new material, and if they’ve used it before.
o CLEAN UP: (2 minutes)
o Make sure everyone writes their name or initials on the back of their paper
o (student) please collect all papers
o please put all oil pastels back in containers and (student) collect them and bring to
big table.
o Make sure to wash your hands when you’re all finished.
o Clean Up for moon sand if applicable:
▪ All sand will be placed back into the bin. Hands washed if necessary.

o SHARE/CLOSURE: (3 minutes)
o Ask students to share what planets they made and what they like or don’t like
about oil pastels.
o Were we able to draw the planets and their many colors? How were we able to
show that a planet has many colors?
