Objective:

1. Define the concept of colonialism and cultural transformation


2. Determine the cultural transformation in relation to colonialism.
3. Identify the changes brought about colonialism to Filipino culture.

Colonialism - the policy or practice of acquiring full or partial political control
over another country, occupying it with settlers, and exploiting it economically.

is the establishment of a colony in one territory by a political power from


another territory, and the subsequent maintenance, expansion, and exploitation of
that colony. The term is also used to describe a set of unequal relationships between
the colonial power and the colony and often between the colonists and
the indigenous peoples.

the policy and practice of a power in extending control over weaker peoples
or areas.

Transformation of culture, or cultural change, is the dynamic process


whereby the living cultures of the world are changing and adapting to external or
internal forces. This process is occurring within Western culture as well as non-
Western and indigenous cultures and cultures of the world. Forces which contribute
to the cultural change described in this article include: colonization, globalization,
advances in communication, transport and infrastructure improvements,
and military expansion.

CULTURE DURING AMERICAN REGIME
1. Government – Democracy, 3 Branches of Government
Executive, Legislative and Judiciary
2. Education – Thomasites serves as the 1st teachers
English serves as the medium of instruction.
Schools Established: University of the Philippines
Philippines Normal College
Other Agricultural School
3. Infrastructure – Americans built roads, streets and bridges.
The new infrastructure helped make the movement of products
and services more efficient
4. Health and Sanitation - Filipinos learned the value of cleanliness, proper
hygiene, and healthy practices.
Hospitals, clinics, and health centers were established
including public hospitals for lepers.
5. Clothing - Women: Dresses, High-heeled shoes, and handbagsMen:
Suits, Polo shirts, ties, and jeans
6. Livelihood - Development of new industries
Increase in Agricultural production
Philippine Economy improved
7. Attitude - “Pagmamano” was replaced by kissing the cheeks of parents
and elders as a sign of respect.
We developed a stronger belief in rights.
Filipinos became more frank, and humorous.
8. Language - Filipinos adopted American names.
The English language was widely taught all over the country.

Americanization of Filipinos Negative Impact of the American Colonization

1. Colonial Mentality

2. Respectful Filipino ways of greeting were replaced by merely saying “hi” or

“hello”

3. Filipinos started to prefer white-collar jobs

4. Traditional Filipino food was replaced

5. Lost our sense of “bayanihan”

6. In summary, we seemed to reject our own identity.


CHANGES BROUGHT ABOUT COLONIALISM TO FILIPINO
CULTURE DURING JAPANESE REGIME
During the Japanese occupation of the Philippines during World War II, the
Japanese influenced the government in the Philippines by enforcing a strict curfew,
adding Japanese currency, instituting a military government and reducing
neighborhood government systems by half.
Influences:
 Using of karaoke.
 Watching anime
 Japanese foods
 Katana as weapon

SUMMARY
Colonialism has it’s own advantage and disadvantage. We suffer loss and
prejudices under the supreme nations and exploited in every aspect for a long period
of time, but on the other hand it gave as the pave way to start on our own government
and democracy and fight for our own independence and culture identity, Furthermore
it had open the door to globalization and improvement of one’s nation.
