2- Insert the following words in the right space below : There’s one extra word (3.5 pts)
-disposal -balance -survival -decline-extinct- industrialization –survivors-dropped

It is an undeniable fact that wildlife is disappearing

from the planet at a catastrophic rate. According to
World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the number of birds,
animals, marine and freshwater creatures have
①dropped by almost one-third.

One reason for the ②decline is man's ever increasing

needs and greed that have resulted in habitat
disappearance . For development purposes, man has
felled trees to build dams, highways and towns and this
has forced the animals to retreat further and further into the receding forests.
Moreover, rapid ③industrialization with its accompanying pollution and the
use of pesticides and insecticides have made ④ survival difficult for a large
number of animals and birds. Fishing and even the inconsiderate action of
picnickers are driving many fish to extinction. Yet, animals and birds are
necessary. They are needed to retain the ⑤ balance in the world of nature.
Animals are also used by psychologists to study animal behavior in order to
understand human behavior better.

So how then can we protect animals and prevent them from becoming
⑥extinct ? First, we need to check human greed by preventing man from
felling trees unnecessarily. Trees should always be replanted if they are felled.
Pollution should be controlled. There should be limited if not zero ⑦disposal
of solid wastes into the sea. More campaigns should be launched to teach the
public on the need to keep our beaches clean.

3-Provide the right tense or form of the words between parenthesis(3.5pts)

At the moment, the world is losing one species of wildlife almost every day. The two
main causes of this decline are the (destroy ) destruction of their habitat and over-
population by human beings. Every minute of the day, 20 hectares of tropical rainforest
are cut down or burned. Hundreds of wild species – insects and plants – are lost as a
result. If it goes on, rainforests (disappear)will disappear in 50years’time. They are
vital in (keep) keeping the Earth’s climate and environment stable. If they are
destroyed, mankind will suffer as well as wildlife. As cities grow and industry (
develop) develops around them, pollution becomes another problem for wildlife.
Friends of Earth believe that two-thirds of the world’s population will be living in urban
areas by the year 2025. Something must be done! In theory, (more ) most countries
agree that there should be no trade in endangered species. Ninety-five countries have
already signed the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild life
and Fauna and Flora. The Conventions aims ( ban ) to ban trade in endangered species
and to limit trade in any species whose population is declining fast. However, in reality
trade in (threat) threatened species is still big business. People can buy fur coats
made from the fur of jaguars, snow leopards and other cats
facing extinction.

4- Choose the right option :

What can you do to save the environment ?

The world around us is in danger. The Earth faces

problems of global warming and massive pollution. So
are our natural resources. How can one person save the environment?

There are many things that we as individuals can do to(- persevere –

preserve-reserve ) the environment. We should take green steps, that is,
change our habits and lifestyles to stop polluting and harming the world
around us. After some contemplation, I know what I can do to contribute (to-
for-by) saving our environment. I will practise the 3Rs - reduce, recycle and
reuse - my dictum in life. I will not be part of the use-and-throw society.

Firstly, I can reduce consumption of paper by using handkerchiefs. I will also

say 'No' to plastic bags. Plastic is not biodegradable. How many times have we
read from the newspapers of fish being (shocked—choked- chokes) to death
because of plastic bags? I will instead carry a cloth bag with me to carry all my
shopping.

(Therefore- However- Besides), there will be less littering and pollution.

Moreover, I will add to my 'No' list of disposables, especially Styrofoam and
polystyrene containers. Again, I will go everywhere prepared. For my
takeaways, I will bring my own tiffin carriers and containers.

This will definitely reduce the amount of rubbish I throw away. Of course, it
can be quite( inconvenient- convenient- disconvenient) but 'little drops
of water make the mighty ocean'.

There seems a lot to be done. I will start today. I will get my family and my
friends to participate in Earth Hour. One small step toward saving the
environment

Good luck
