According to Wikipedia, sustainable development is a development process (land,

cities, businesses, communities, etc.) that has the principle of "meeting current needs without
sacrificing the fulfillment of the needs of future generations". Meanwhile, according to Emil
Salim (Rahadian, 2016), sustainable development intend to improve people's welfare, to meet
human needs and aspirations. In the seventeen sustainable development goals, the 8th and 9th
objectives are the focus of the discussion in this scientific paper. These two objectives speak of
the government's efforts to create full and productive employment and to encourage an inclusive
and sustainable industry.
The world is currently facing the 4th industry change known as Industry 4.0. Based on
the Mckinsey Global Institute analysis (Venti, 2018), Industry 4.0 has a very large and broad
impact, especially in the employment sector, where robots and machinery will eliminate many
jobs in the world. For this reason the industrial revolution era must be addressed by industry
players wisely and carefully. In Indonesia, this revolutionary movement has been welcomed by
the government through its commitment to build a globally competitive manufacturing industry
through accelerating the implementation of Industry 4.0. This was marked by the launch of
Making Indonesia 4.0 as a roadmap and strategy for Indonesia to enter the digital era that is
currently underway. The Ministry of Industry designed Making Indonesia 4.0 as an integrated
roadmap to implement as much as of strategies in entering the Industrial 4.0 era. The
implementation of Industry 4.0 intend to create more sustainable economic growth.
The industrial revolution movement was marked by the emergence of the use of digital
technology as the main element of this revolution. Digital technology is the term to refer to a set
of value chain technologies and organizations in the form of smart factories, CPS, IoT and IoS.
Smart factory is a modular factory with CPS technology that monitors the physical process of
production and then displays it virtually and decentralizes decision making. Through IoT, CPS is
able to communicate with each other and work together in real time including with humans. IoS
is all service applications that can be utilized by every stakeholder both internally and between
organizations.
Industrial revolution 4.0 generally have the same concept with sustainable
development goals. This industrial revolution emphasizes the importance of using digital
technology in the field of industry in increasing economic growth in a nation in response to
global market competition. This concept is in line with the 8th and 9th sustainable development
goals which are to create full and productive employment and to encourage an inclusive and
sustainable industry.
As one of the actors in the field of industry, the Vocational High School is expected to
be a major contribution in realizing the 8th and 9th sustainable development goals in the middle
of the industrial revolution 4.0 era. Vocational graduates are expected to be qualified human
resources. Therefore, it is necessary to optimize the use of digital technology as a characteristic
of this revolution and the renewal of the types of learning that are being applied in Vocational
Schools. In this scientific paper, the type of learning offered is a type of project-based learning.
This type of learning is considered relevant to the demands of Human Resources in the middle of
the era of industrial revolution 4.0.
Project-based learning at Vocational Schools in general will produce prospective
workers who are competent in certain fields of work so that they have a great opportunity to be
accepted as workers, especially in the industrial sector. This learning is oriented to the
performance of individuals in the world of work, has a specific justification for the real needs in
the field, sensitivity to the world of work, and based on training and action. Therefore, project-
based learning activities support the process of constructing knowledge and developing
productive competencies of students which actually appear in the form of technical skills, and
skills as graduates or good prospective workers.
Project-based learning with the use of digital technology in vocational schools is a
collaborative learning solution with the aim of meeting the demands of Human Resources in the
era of industrial revolution 4.0. Expected Human Resources are Human Resources who are able
to handle various types of tasks and are able to implement capabilities that are in accordance
with the type of work that exists. The objectives of these two aspects are in line with the 8th and
9th goals of sustainable development launched by the government.
