SWOT Analysis of Star City:
“Where a world of excitement, entertainment and education awaits.”
Category: Amusement Park/Theme Park
Segment: People belonging to all age groups
Target Group: Kids, teenagers and families from the Philippines and tourists from all over
theworld
Strengths:
As a famous and affordable weekend get-away, Star City has many strong assets.
1. Situated right at the heart of the metropolis. Close enough to home than any other amusement
parks in the Philippines.
2. Located in the North Western part of Pasay where most of the tourist attractions are seen.
Visiting the place will not only give you a fun-filled day but also tour around the area and seethe
nearby tourist attractions such as Cultural Center of the Philippines, Coconut Palace, Philippine
International Convention Center, Manila Yacht Club and a lot more.
3. Focuses on providing families with maximum enjoyment through a stimulating array of indoor
and outdoor attractions to captivate both the young and the young at heart. Contains a variety of
rides and attractions meant for kids, adults and for the whole family.
Kiddie Rides:
“Kiddie bumper cars” that let kids enjoy the thrill of driving without the hassle of the city’s heavy
traffic, a “Ferris Wheel for Kids” wherein kids can enjoy the feel of a Ferris wheel minus the fear
of heights, a “Magic Tea Cup” that could serve as a kid’s resting nest after playing inside playpens
and/or ball pools, a “Quack Quack” seven-meter revolving kiddie ride that has six tubs/coaches
designed as ducks each with four seating capacity, a “Little Tyke” that serves as an indoor fun and
place to use their imagination while playing, and a “Rodeo” that let the kids enjoy a variety of
modes of transportation – from fire trucks to medics emergency vehicles.
Adult Rides:
“Jumping Star” and experience a slow ascend to the top and a heart pounding drop as you fall
weightlessly, come across playing with death for just a minute as you ride “Star Flyer” an inverted
rollercoaster that was imported from California, enjoy the “Wild River” a ride that consists of over
a dozen log boats (each with seating capacity of six adults) that travels down a channel propelled
by a strong current of water, run down memory lane and drive with the classics “Adult Bumper
Car” and “Adult Bumper Boat”, “Blizzard” is an adult roller coaster ride that will take you to an
exciting experience. Give a go to riding “Viking” a pirate ship-inspired adult ride that swings
forward and backward horizontally, and for a unique and exhilarating experience, try the “Zyklon
Loop” and “Surf Dance” a first and only of its kind in the Philippines – a gondola ride that is about
the height of a five-story building; the 44-seat rides wings upwards, downwards, and sideways.
Family Rides:
“Dragon Express” is a newly themed roller coaster ride for the whole family. Visiting the “Magic
Forest” offers a relaxing break from the tiring and exciting tour inside the park. “Balloon Wheel”
is a giant Ferris wheel that offers a panoramic view of the city from a height of 22 meters,
accommodating 56 people at a time. “Red Baron” makes your child imagine himself/herself as the
World War I ace flyer. An all- family coaster ride, “Wacky Worm” is themed as giant caterpillar
that carries 36 people the double level track. Composed of 16independently controlled units that
can be turned, lifted and dropped, “Telecombat” is an all - family ride simulating a mini space
vehicle. Lastly is the “Grand Carousel” is the first double decked carousel in the country,
showcasing an excellent European craftsmanship. It has a capacity of 72 people, regarded as the
most popular all-family ride in the park.
Top Attractions:
The “4D Super Maxrider”, “Pirate adventure”, a boat ride that will take you to the world of the
most adventurous seafarers. You could see true-to-life Pirates sail throughout this
amazing journey. Experience the ultimate laser adventure fight only at “Lazer Blaster”. “Peter
Pan” is a walk-through spell binding fantasy attraction bringing to life the tale and adventures of
Peter Pan, Captain Hook and the rest of the kids. Travel through time with the walk-through
attraction from Dinosaur era to computer ages at “Time Tunnel”. “Snow World” is considered to
be one of the most favorite Star City attractions, come inside to meet Snowman and experience
winter without the hassle of going out of the country. Be thrilled with the realistic design of a walk
through attraction themed after the Egyptian legends and fabled stories of the mummy in “Kilabot
ng Mummy”. Similar to “Kilabot ng Mummy” is Dungeon and “Gabi ng Lagim” wherein you’ll
be horrified with ghostly legends of zombies, Filipino mythical creatures like aswang, tyanak,
kapre, dwende and others that will leave you in horror. Last is the “Land of Giants” where you
would see the physical world in a bigger picture.4. Does not only serve for your amusement, but
also fills in your food cravings. In terms of dining, people can also find several restaurants and fast
food chains inside.5. Features bazaars where people can purchase cheap clothes, faux jewelry,
toys, footwear and bags which prices are similar to other flea markets in Manila.
Weaknesses:
Star City’s main weakness comes in the way people perceived the amusement park.
1. Star City is old and has been operating since 1991. Most of the kiddie rides are old but functional.
The rides are not photogenic at all but they get the job done in entertaining the kids.
2. Adult rides placed indoors. (Blizzard)
3. Carnival Layout. In the effort to bring everything indoors, they sacrificed the zonings and
location of the rides.
4. Marketing is poor. The website is outdated with photos that are not updated. Their brochure is
only a map with outdated attractions.
5. There are accidents that already happened here that led to the death of girl who fell from Wild
River last 2006 and a man who fell from Star Flyer last 2009.
Opportunities:
There are some opportunities that the park should consider in order to boost their number
ofvisitors.1. Near Star City is the Star Theater and Aiw Theater. After every show itineraries in
the said theatres, people can go and spend time in Star City.2. Parking Space. There is no room
for hassle for people going to the said amusement park for there is an appropriate place and time
for their cars to be parked.
PARK LOCATION:
Star City is located at Star City, Sotto St., CCP Complex Roxas Blvd., Pasay City.
PARK SCHEDULE:
Monday – Thursday 4:00 PM – onwards |Friday, Saturday Sunday/Holiday 2:00 PM – onwards
3. Promo Packages. School Tours, Birthday Parties, or any Corporate Events. A school field trip
like no other, not just a memorable birthday celebration but an exciting one, a unique place for
organizing company events/outing would be peculiar if spent in Star City.4. Apart from the usual
rides, the annual events and shows have great crowd pulling potential.5. By introducing new
attractions/rides from time to time, the park can attract more and more visitors.
Threats:
1. Although Star City has proven to be a successful amusement park, it also has its competitors:
Enchanted Kingdom in Laguna and Gloria Fantasyland, housed inside Gloria de Dapitan in
Dapitan. Enchanted Kingdom is a theme park that boasts of rides and attractions within seven
meticulously themed zones interspersed with food and merchandise outlets and kiosks as well as
various game stands also added to the “enchanting experience”, away from the day-to-day realities
of life. Gloria’s Fantasyland is a world class theme park located in Dapitan City – it is the biggest
theme park outside of Metro Manila and is comparable to Luzon’s Enchanted Kingdom and Star
City, and maybe even Disneyland, an international theme park; the park does not look like a
“perya” as others may think it is – it has a land area of almost 4 hectares with several state of the
art rides that has colorful and attractive designs and lightings, and entertainment shows that both
kids and adults will surely enjoy the fun and thrilling experience.
2. Direct Competition. There are rides that are similar to those rides in Enchanted Kingdom such
as Wild River (aka Jungle Log Jam), Viking (aka Anchor’s Away) and Zyklon Loop (aka Space
Shuttle). A possibility that people might compare which park would give them a better experience
in riding these extreme rides.
3. Food price. There are a lot of food stalls inside the park but most of these offer more expensive
treats as compared to those in front or outside Star City. Star City’s extra income might be at
stake.4. The park operates in a very competitive environment, where lack of innovation can prove
to be a disaster.
COMPETITORS!
1. Enchanted Kingdom in Laguna
2. Gloria Fantasyland, housed inside Gloria de Dapitan in Dapitan.
Enchanted Kingdom
Location: San Lorenzo Rd, Laguna, Santa Rosa, 4026 Laguna
Features: It has a land area of 25 hectares (62 acres). The initial design of the park, which was
presented to the Mamons by the consultants they brought in, was heavily inspired by Philippine
architecture. The concept was not chosen since the Mamons preferred a fantasy-oriented design.
Mario Mamon stated that if the initial design was used instead, it would result in visitors seeing
what they see "outside in their normal lives" which he remarks would "sort of break the magic".[2]
The rides and attractions of the park are scattered across seven themed zones. [5] The zones are
Victoria Park, Portabello, Boulderville, Midway Boardwalk, Brooklyn Place, Spaceport, and
Jungle Outpost. Victoria Park, which includes the main entrance, is patterned after the Victorian
era. Boulderville is a small ride area for children which is similar to the fictional town
of Bedrock from The Flintstones. Midway Boardwalk is based on 1930s Coney Island and
features the most rides. Jungle Outpost is based on the Amazon Jungle in South America.
Spaceport is dedicated to the Space Age. Brooklyn Place is based on 1940s New York and
the silent film era. Finally, Portabello is based on the Caribbean/West Indies.[2]
Future zones planned include a zone dedicated to the amusement park's mascot, Eldar, as well as
a zone focusing on Philippine culture, dubbed as the Cultural Zone, which recalls the initial
concept for the park.

- Plunged attendance by 1997
- Maintenance made up the bulk of its expenses
- Usually took 30-40 minutes for the visitor to wait (waiting lines) for a major ride during peak
seasons because of overcrowding
- The park had to continue incurring fixed overhead costs to serve a very thin crowd during lean
months
- Late and/or absence of any sales blitz in the form of posters and flyers to universities and
colleges
Opportunities
- Visitors coming in groups could be corporate (handling company anniversaries, parties, product
launches, company and family outings, sport fests, wedding receptions, birthday parties, concerts
and fund-raising activities), travel (handling tour groups), and school (handling educational field
trips, graduation balls, and prom nights)
- Majority of those who visited the park were young people between 13 to 29 years of age.
-A big chunk of the park’s revenues came from its admission fees and retail operations.
- Continuous demand for recreational activities- People celebrate different occasions all througho
ut the year- Increasing demand on semestral breaks and vacation of students- People are attracted
on buying group or corporate packages
Threats
- Precarious economic conditions (currency crisis) in late 1997- Competition from other recreatio
nal establishments- Fluctuating demand
- The Financial Crisis in Asia-
People began cutting “unnecessary expenses” including leisure expenses
- Fluctuating demands all throughout the year- Negative responses of the disappointed customers
- Competition from other recreational establishments such as malls.
