• Description

Block 1 Gasangan St. Baseco Barangay 649, Zone 68 Port Area is located at

Southern Manila along Pasig River, District V and has a population of 40, 065

individuals from total population of 59, 847. A health center and a high school

named after Corazon C. Aquino are also located in Baseco. The transportation

system includes tricycles, bicycles and pedi cabs, which are sources of income.

Some infrastructures are well established but not fully accomplished. Littered

alleys connect the houses. Channels necessary to disseminate health

information includes cellular phones, internet and barangay health workers’

house-to-house announcements.

1.3 Resources of the Community


Starting from north heading towards east, there is a public market and

police station. From east heading towards south, there is a barangay hall,

playground, gymnasium and tricycle terminal. From south heading towards

west, there is Pres. Corazon C. Aquino High school, public toilet, community

library, gulayan ni Villar, Baptist Church and Sto. Nino Learning Center. From

west heading to north, there is a health center (CALIC) and elementary

school (Benigno Aquino Elementary School.

• POPULATION

• Total Population of the Barangay

The total population of barangay 649 Zone 68 Baseco, Port Area,

Manila is about 40,065 and about 10,085 is from the Gasangan Area.

• Total Population of the Families Surveyed

There are four hundred three (403) families surveyed in Barangay

649, Zone 68 Block 1-Gasangan, Baseco Port Area, Manila with a total

population of 1827 individuals.

• Sex Ratio
SR = 105.05

Analysis:

In the population of 153 families surveyed, there are 936 males and

891 females with a total population of 1827 individuals. The ratio

shows that in every male there is 1 female which indicates that they

have equal attention to any health promotions and activities that will be

implemented in the Barangay or community.

Analysis: The data presented in Table 1 signifies that there are more males than

females in Barangay 649 Zone 68 Block 1-Gasangan Baseco, Port Area Manila. The

data also shows that within the age bracket of 5-9, 10-14, 15-19, 20-24, and 25-29 y/o.

This indicates that the health care team will be more focus in the promotion of health

towards children age, adolescent age and mid 20s with the highest percentage.

Analysis: The data shown in Table 2 Percentage Distribution

Showing the Civil Status of Individuals 15 y/o & above means that most

individual in Block 1 Gasangan St. Baseco Barangay 386 are single. This

may imply that most of the population may be part of the dependent

population.

• ECONOMIC INDICES

• Dependency Ratio

Analysis:

The dependency ratio of Block 1 Gasangan St. Baseco Barangay 649

shows that the population of the dependent individuals is 60. 26% of the total
population of 15 years old and above, this simply indicates that the dependent

individuals are nearly equal to the employed individual.

Analysis: As presented in Table 3 most of them could earn as much as Php 5000-6999

per month. It signifies that the families surveyed are not able to meet the poverty

threshold according NEDA (National Economic and Development Authority). “Under the

current conditions, a simple and comfortable life would entail having a gross monthly

income of P120, 000 per family per month (P100, 000 for a family of four members per

month), according to NEDA data” (Cabuenas, J.V. 2016. GMA news).

Analysis: Table 4 Percentage Distribution Showing the Types of

Occupation of Earning Individuals shows that employed individuals in Block 1

Gasangan St. Baseco Barangay 649 are earning from blue-collar jobs that can cause

occupational hazards to health.

Analysis

Out of 721 individuals who are 8 years old and above, 621 are literate,

implying that these individuals have a potent ability to understand the basic

health teachings and programs to be conducted. In addition, such high result


may be a key factor for the development of the community as a whole in the

near future.

Analysis: Based on Table 5, higher portion of the population attained

Elementary level of education, thus, implying that the majority of the population are

quite incapable of understanding complex health teachings about the development of

life and their state of health. Therefore, adjustments are mandatory for the nurses in

order for them to be understood. This will lead to a successful health education that will

eventually benefit the families surveyed within the premises of Gasangan in Baseco.

Analysis: Based on Table 6, health program developments must adhere to the

diversity of the present religions in the area.

Analysis: The data shown in Table 7 is significant in considering culture and

ethnicity of the population in developing and implementing health care programs.

Analysis: Table 8 shows that the families are well oriented and adjusted to their

environment as evidenced by the number of residing years in Baseco. This can also

become a data for tracking communicability of specific diseases caused by migration.

Analysis: Based on Table 9 Types of Housing of the Surveyed Families are

mostly mixed, which give the families privacy but it is not sturdy enough in times of

disasters.

Analysis: Table 10 shows that most of the families surveyed owned their houses,

meaning they can save the money intended for rent bills and use it for basic needs and

health expenses.

Analysis: Based on Table 11 it shows that most of the families’ houses is

adequate in ventilation. It implicates that the families are at low risk of disease and

illness due to poor ventilation.

Analysis: Based on Table 12 it shows that their water source comes from

communal faucet. It implicates that it has a lower chances of spread of the

communicable disease if the water source is not totally covered and secure.

Analysis: Based on Table 13 it shows that their way of is Pour-Flush Toilet. In

this way it has higher chances of acquiring disease that is related to improper excreta

disposal.

Analysis: Table 14 shows that most are doing DPS waste collection, which can

prevent occurrence of improper waste management- related diseases. Educating the

people about Waste Segregation benefits and importance is recommended.

Analysis: Table 15 shows that most of the families cover their leftover food,

which can be a cause of several food-borne diseases.

Analysis: According to the WHO and UNICEF, infants ages 0-6months are

required to only drink breastmilk because it offers right amount of nutrients that can help

the infants grow stronger and healthier than the milk use in the bottlefeeding.

Breastfeeding also gives benefits to the mother and the baby because it is free, it

creates bonding for the mother and infant, can give to the baby anytime, and many

more. This implicates that mothers in the community are aware of the benefits of

breastfeeding their babies.

Analysis: Based on Table 17 it shows that the families are adhering to the

immunization to prevent diseases.

Analysis: Table 18 shows that families surveyed usually goes to the health

center to address their health related needs. It implicates that the families are aware of

the western health care facilities within the area.

Analysis: This table presents the TOP 10 MORBIDITY CASES of the whole

District V Health Center that includes the Corazon Aquino Lying-in Clinic and Health

Center. It shows that different respiratory diseases like TB respiratory, Pneumonia,

Bronchitis etc. are the main causes of morbidity in District V.


• SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION

Community health nursing views the community as its primary client and

family as its basic unit. Community plays an important role in influencing the

different individuals, population group and families within an area that may

affect their health, wellness and awareness, thus making it a great opportunity

to make an action in health promotion and program implementation for illness

prevention in the aspect of nursing care. As part of the adopted community of

Universidad de Manila, we visited Block 1 Gasangan St. Baseco Barangay

649, Zone 68 Port Area, Manila District V to find out several health problems

which has something to do with the health practices such as hygiene, lack of

knowledge, culture, environment and economical sources that is present

around the area. In conclusion, after observing, conducting the survey and

evaluating the results from the four hundred four (404) families that we have

visited, we are able to identify problems such as Food handling and storage,

Presence of flies/rodents and mosquitoes, Livelihood for women and Proper

waste disposal. And with these findings, we are implementing a Program

action plan to have a successful and sustainable activities for the betterment

of the whole community. Providing an effective and sustainable action plan for

the community can help lessen if not, prevent the identified problems within

the area.

• SUGGESTIONS/RECOMMENDATION

From the following problems identified in the community I therefore, recommend the

following:

• The community must learn on proper food handling and storage, as well

as the diseases that can occur due to mishandling food.

• The community leaders must implement strict adherence to waste

segregation.

• The community leaders must provide a good amount of public toilets and

must implement strict maintenance of its cleanliness.
