Short Essay on the Possibility of Christian Lawyers

In life we want to be the best, have the best of everything, and be surrounded by only the
best people that can help us to achieve our desired goals. But as a Christian it takes more than
just wanting the best, you must put forward the effort, and follow the path that God has set
forth.

But unfortunately, when you are a Christian, some things will get in your way, your faith
can become tested, and your decision making can become clouded. But you probably ask yourself
why? You have love for your fellow Christians and have helped those that were less fortunate
than you. So why are you the one that seems to keep struggling?
When you are a Christian these things won’t last always, just look to the Father and He will direct
your path. Yes, you have helped others, but did you do all you could, did you give from the heart
or just from your purse? It does not matter how much you give, but when it is not from the heart
it will only dissatisfy the Lord.

This is how we as an aspiring lawyer should act. Let as be guided by the teachings of the
Lord. Let us not only be guided by the Bible but also through the ethics we can conclude from the
interpretations we have based on the individuals in the Bible stories. Let us interpret the good
things from the bad, that way we can be both good Christians and lawyers one day.

Although the path can be difficult as we can always be tested with our faith and the belief
in the current judicial system. I often think as early as now that the possibility to become a
Christian and a lawyer at the same time is to be open to the thought that it is not possible.

The conclusion of making both way possible is to let the question remain unsettled so
that the tentative answer is an admonition attempt in the practice of law more than the practice
itself, the professionalism of it, can bear. To the extent that one determines to conduct his
practice as moral conversion, his advocacy as moral discourse, his lawyer skills as the virtue of
hope, his life as an affirmation that justice is a gift not a commodity from the government, I think
it is possible to be a Christian and a lawyer.
Again, in life we want the best. Thus, one day we might want to become the best lawyer
the Philippine judicial system could ever seen but vying for the top lawyer attribute is
competitive. Of course, neither competition nor love of it is sin. But pride fuels competition, and
an unchecked spirit of competition will most certainly lead to pride.

I recognize many of this thoughts in the movies or even watching news on the television,
but of course, they eventually find roots in the Bible. We can find the emphasis throughout God’s
Word, but Jesus said it most powerfully. “Everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he
who humbles himself will be exalted.” (Luke 14:11, 18:14) Peter captured it well in I Peter 5:5-6,
“All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because God opposes the proud,
but gives grace to the humble. Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that He
may lift you up in due time.” Possible? Yes, but not easy!
