Seismic Analysis of Base Isolated Structures

Lecture # 18

Energy Dissipating Devices

Earthquake bring energy

which results in vibrations
of buildings

Base Isolated Structures
Base isolation reduces the transmission of ground motion to the
building thus producing a seismic load on base isolated structure
smaller than fixed base structure

TYPES OF BASE ISOLATORS

Low Damping High Damping Lead Rubber

Rubber Bearing Rubber Bearing Bearing

Merits and Demerits of BIS
• MERITS
– Can be retrofitted.
– The deflection and stresses are lower.
– Smarter cross-sections.
– Remain serviceable after an earthquake.

• DEMERITS
– Cannot resist earthquakes in vertical direction.
– Allowance/Chances for building overturning .
– Skilled labour required
– Difficult to placed where the terrain is uneven

Organized by Dr.Aslam Faqeer Mohammad 337

General Design Principle
By reducing the stiffness, we can increase the period of the structure resulting
in a reduced response to the earthquake motion . In addition to that the
provision of increased damping provides increased energy dissipation thus
further reducing the response.
