Chapter 1
The Problem and it’s Background

Graduating students from secondary schools may not have solid decision
on where to go in college and what degree program they may possibly take.
They are planning to enter college without clear idea of what career to pursue for
their future (Ramirez &Dizon, 2014). They may sometimes consider the people
and the information they received within their environment. There are several
factors that may affect the decision of students and parents, where it can be a
good source of insight for private higher education institutions to offer quality
services that will suit to the needs, expectations and demands of the community.
Academic institutions sought to observe the requirements of the customers,
prospective students and other clients like industry partners when preparing an
educational program (Hrnciar&Madzík, 2013).The decision on good career
choice and school sometimes depend on how the way students perceive the world
and their future. Some of them may not have enough knowledge and
consciousness about how they should process information from personal, social,
economical, political, spiritual and environmental aspects of putting into context
and realization of having a successful profession. Pafili and Mylonakis (2014).
emphasized that in coming up with the right decision of what profession to take,
students can properly utilize their skills and knowledge to gain proper experience
who could contribute to the development and welfare of the society but Koni,
Zainal, and Ibrahim (2012) noted that some studies show that not all students
who enter a university have the intention to obtain the degree.

The choice of career of the students is being influenced by some factors from the
social environment, mainly the parents as immediate family who plays an active
role in choosing the right education for their children (Pafili&Mylonakis, 2014). As
a sign of respect for the parents and culture of the Filipinos, parents or the elderly

are being consulted first by their children because primarily they will be the one
to provide the financial support to enter in college (Laguador, 2014).

Scope and Delimitation

This study deals with the factors affecting the choice of school and the
student’s level of interest in senior high school strand related to college courses
in Commonwealth High school year of 2018-2019 with their major variable which
is the choice of school and the sub variables are the personal choice, quality of
education, proximity and accessibility, influence of people. This study was
focused on who affect them in their choice of school and their level of interest in
their choice of school.

This study deals with the major variables which is the choice of school. Personal
choice, the quality of their education, proximity and accessibility and the influence
of people. Are personal choice are the main reason why they pursue college
degree, are the quality of education has a resourceful and has a great
opportunity, proximity and accessibility has not far from their home that’s why
they choose that school, are the people around them affect to student’s to pursue
college degree.

COMMONWEALTH HIGH SCHOOL
Theoretical Framework

aslow’s hierarchy of needs is the fundamental theory of one’s

behavior including the motivation of doing something. The students’
choice of career may be attributed to their physiological needs, good
and decent meals, shelter for safety, recognitions and belongingness
to the family, intrinsic motivation of self-discover and actualization.
There could be some reasons for some as what Skinner’s Operant
Conditioning described. People behave or do (refrain from doing)
things because of rewards and punishments. Some students could
have been forced to take the career they planned because of fear
(negative stimulant).Piaget's (1936) theory of cognitive development
explains how a child constructs a mental model of the world. He
disagreed with the idea that intelligence was a fixed trait, and
regarded cognitive development as a process which occurs due to
biological maturation and interaction with the environment. he
cognitive development was a progressive reorganization of mental
processes as a result of biological maturation and environmental
experience (Leod, 2017)

Definition of terms

The choice of school- School choice allows public education funds to follow
students to the schools or services that best fit their needs (Edchoice).

Personal choice- free and independent choice; voluntary decision: You took on
the responsibility of your own free will.

Quality of education- good quality education is one that provides all learners with
capabilities they require to become economically productive, develop sustainable
livelihoods, contribute to peaceful and democratic societies and enhance
individual well-being (VVOB).

Proximity and accessibility- the nearest of school or house rather accessibility

means the quality of being easy or to reached.

Influence of people- Influence is the power to have an important effect on

someone or something. If someone influences someone else, they are changing
a person or thing in an indirect but important way.

Review of related literature and studies

This chapter presents a review related literature and studies related to

Factorsthat affect student’s in selecting their school and college degreeThe
chapter includes the following topics. Senior High School and Factors affect
student’s in selecting their school and college degree.

Foreign literature

Graduating students from secondary schools may not have solid decision on
where to go in college and what degree program they may possibly take. They
are planning to enter college without clear idea of what career to pursue for their
future (Ramirez &Dizon, 2014).It related to our topic because students in grade
12 some of them have not solid decision if they want to pursue college and some
of them too did not know what will they take.

According to Boyer (2013), “in taking a course, one of the life’s major decision is
being made. A lot of time, money, and effort will be involved. The shape and
excellence of the student’s life may rest on the result.” In choosing a junior,
senior academic track, a student should take a risk. It is related to our topic
because in upcoming college year you need to have a major decision if you will
pursue college and what course are you fit in for your future.

According to (Ramirez 2013) They find personal factor as high influence in their
interest towards engineering program. Students who personally decided to take
engineering have higher sense of inner growth that influenced their interest
towards the engineering program. Personal and environmental factors have
11
COMMONWEALTH HIGH SCHOOL
greater influence in the interest of the engineering students towards their enrolled
degree program.

According to (nadelson, 2013)a mixture of influences on their decision to attend

the university, and correlations between program awareness and the influence
on students’ university attendance. We also uncovered a number of relationships
between expectations, experience, and perceptions of influences with the
personal characteristics of the students. Implications, directions for future
research, and limitations are discussed. It relates to our topic because some of
the graduated students in senior high school did not meet expectations and don’t
know what to do next if they will continue college or not.

Guiding the students well with patience and understanding must be given to them
because of their levels of ability that need to be nourished to survive in more
complex challenges of engineering especially malestudents (Laguador, 2013b).
Giving them enough attention would lead them to greater accomplishment oftheir
future careers. It related to our topic because grade 12 students need a better
understanding on what happen in the future and nourished their knowledge to
prepare for the next year and how are they interest to a college degree.

Local Literature

F. Yates, Veinotte, &Patalano (2003) define a decision as “…a commitment to a

course of action that is intended to produce a satisfying state of affairs.” A
student will choose a course which he/she will be studying throughout his/her
college years, and decision-making should take part and should not take for
granted. It related to our topic because when choosing a course she/he will be
studying it until the college end that should students need to have a wise
decision if they will pursue college they need to choose the course that based on
12
COMMONWEALTH HIGH SCHOOL
their strand because once you choose a strand it means it related to your course
next year.

According to (Ericta, 2013). Mismatch graduates are believed to be a reason why

the country has high unemployment rate. The reasons of these mismatches
might be due to the produced graduates of colleges that do not fit the present
demand of the economy, or the graduates were not capable of achieving the
required skills the industry needs. It related to our topic some of the grade 12
students did not meet expectations because for example you’re in Humss strand
and you want to be an accountancy in college it does not fit in your strand that
you choose and you don’t want idea what you will be taking in college because
supposed to be related to your strand.

Senior high school students may not be able to identify their own deficiency as
far as their choices are concerned because of the interrelationship of these
factors, such as age, gender, the socio – economic status of the family. Stated,
that the greatest barrier among students pursuing their own career and having
command over their life is the lack of in depth knowledge of the said3career. In
addition, knowledge is required to make valid career preferences. (Philips, 1986).
It related to our topics because it concerned about students who are going to
college student’s need to identify their choices based on what strand related to
their college courses.

According to Supeer (2014), the students should first become aware of the need
for a career. So every graduating student needs a wise choice in decision
making. It related to our topic because students need to be aware and need to
have a wise choice when it make a decision on college degree.
13
COMMONWEALTH HIGH SCHOOL
Being adolescent can be extremely lonely. It is not unusual to have a feeling that
there is no one turn to when problems come arise. This is the stage where major
decisions and deep concerns affect the courses of their lives. Most adolescents
are pressured to perform and succeed, which experience severe stress in
meeting these expectations (Psychology.com, 2017). It related to our topic the
major stage when senior high school will make a decision if they will continue
college or not and what courses they will prefer because it is part of their future
decision.

Chapter 5

This chapter presents the summary, findings, conclusions and recommendations

of the study.

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS

The main purpose of this study was to identify the factors affecting the choice

of school towards college . To determined what factors that affect students

choice of school is it Personal Choice, Quality of Education, Proximity and

Accessibility, Influence of people.

This study was conducted in Commonwealth High School, with a total number

of two hundred fifty-six respondents of Grade 12 Senior High School. Descriptive

method was used in this study. Descriptive design because to determine the

factors that influence the choice of school and the level of interest towards

college level. The researchers used a checklist- questionnaire method in order to

reveal the relationship of the variables. The major instrument used in this study

was survey questionnaire in which frequencies, percentage, ranking, weighted

mean were determined statistical treatment.

27
COMMONWEALTH HIGH SCHOOL
FINDINGS

1.Based on the results gathered, the following findings are hereby presented:

Majority of the respondents are males with a frequency of one hundred thirty

(130) and percentage of 50%. On the other hand, females comprised one

hundred twenty five (125) respondents with a percentage of 50%.In taking

college .in terms of type of school, (195) or 75.87% of the respondents preferred

to study in state university, while (66) or 24.12% preferred the private schools.

In terms of pursuing college, majority or 205 (78.85%) of the respondents

answered yes, while 55 or 21.15% of the respondents answered no. In terms of

who inhibits them why are they not pursuing college majority 28 or (10.77%) of

the respondents answered priority it means they following their priority first before

going to college.

2.In terms of the factors that affect student’s in choosing their school is majority

of the whole personal choice is the one factor that affect with a majority of

(3.17%) it means they choose that school not because someone or people

influence them it is because that is their personal choice why they choose that

school and Quality of education of (2.98%) it means they choose that school

because of the quality of education of school that they will study.

28
COMMONWEALTH HIGH SCHOOL
Conclusion

1.It is their personal choice of the students to go to school also quality education

also being considered in making their decision. Being a student’s, student need

to be a practical when choosing a course and school once you choose your

school and course it means that’s you dream the quality of education in that

school that will suit in students career choice. They strongly believe that they can

be successful along the college degree. This is their number one motivation that

they really believe in their mind that they can be successful along the college

degree if they can practice, study hard and work hard for what students want to

achieve.

2. Students from public high school have significantly higher possibility being

influence by themselves their own choice in choosing their school. And they have

a higher level of Interest towards college degree.

29
COMMONWEALTH HIGH SCHOOL
Recommendation

Based on the foregoing findings, the researchers would recommend the

following:

1.As a student take a risk to choose your own personal choice obey what you

want, choose a course and school that suit to you. Parents should

encourage, guide, motivate and inspire their children in carefully choosing their

career and school. Concenrate on what college should take when you depend on

what interests and you can. Know your interest then choose a career that suit to

you. Always think positive by choosing your career.

2. For those who are studying at the public school, think about what to do before

you can choose what to expect, think about what motivates you to get your

career. Always follow your will and not others. Parents are the first to guide

children to avoid influencing others especially in their choice of course.

3. For the future researcher think about what your goals and work hard on it.

Follow your dreams choose a school that suits to you don’t listen to the people

that will affect you in your goals.
