● Write a narrative based on a character that they have created.
● Connect their creation of the mask to the character in the narrative
they write.

Materials:
● Augmented Reality Masks
● Colored Pencils/Drawing Utensils
● Phones/Ipad
● Quiver Application
● The Meaning Behind the Mask (Lesson Ideas for teachers)
○ Activity 1 (Bellringers)
● Mask Video
● Mask Notes
● Collaborative Google Slides Example
● Brainstorm Worksheet

Introduction:

Day 1:
● Bellringer Discussion Post: (Discussion will be posted on Schoology)
○ What is a mask? List as many places, events, or occasions where
you have seen masks as you can. *Face painting can count as a
mask
○ Comment on at least two of your classmates’ posts
○ Discuss as a class
● Students will watch a brief video on the history of masks.
● Students will be split up into five groups - each group will receive a
different type of mask to study. Students will add to collaborative
Google slides about their particular mask using the notes guide. They
must answer all of the questions outlined in the notes.
○ Mask 1 - Egyptian Masks
○ Mask 2 - Modern Masks
○ Mask 3 - Japanese Masks
○ Mask 4 - Greek Masks
○ Mask 5 - Theater Masks
● Once finished, students will present their mask to the class. The teacher
will project the collaborative Google slides on the board. Group
members will go to the front of the room to share.

Lesson (5 Days):

Day 1:
● Bellringer: (Assignment posted in Schoology) How can masks be used to
tell a story? Explain.
● Teacher will introduce the project to students - students will create a
mask that will be transformed using augmented reality. Students will
then create a story about the mask that they created.
○ Project Directions
● Students pick a mask to create from the choices provided.
● Students fill out brainstorm worksheet to begin the writing process.

Day 2:
● Bellringer: Now that you have thought about your character and what
you want them to be like, it is time to think about how you would
describe them in your narrative. List 5 adjectives that you would use to
describe your character. Bonus points if you use those adjectives in their
story!
● Now that students know the direction they are taking with their masks,
students will color and create their mask. They will use the mask as an
inspiration for their writing assignment.

Day 3:
● Writing Day - Students will write their narrative based on the
guidelines/rubric provided.

Day 4:
● Writing Day - Students will write their narrative based on the
guidelines/rubric provided.
● Students must “publish” their assignment today.
○ Students will print their completed project and attach it to their
mask.

Day 5:
● Presentation Day - Students will be split into groups based on the
number of students in the classroom.
● Students are responsible for sharing their mask with their group.
○ Students will use the augmented reality application to bring their
character to life.
○ While group members are viewing the mask, the creator will share
their narrative. The story of their character will be told through
both the writer and the mask.

Wrap-Up: Students will reflect on their creative process. Students will hang their
projects in the hallway with directions on how to bring their augmented reality
creations to life.
