Eureka Math Module 4 Lesson 1: Area

Online Instructions

Lesson Description:
In this lesson, we will be using our prior knowledge of multiplication patterns to learn about the area of
shapes. We will be using pattern blocks to understand area and compare the sizes of different shapes.

Our objective for this lesson will be:


● I can understand area as an attribute of plane figures.

Instructions:
We will begin our lesson with a fluency warm-up first. We will then move into the application problem,
learn the concept, practice some problem sets, and complete an exit ticket at the end to check for our
understanding. The step by step instructions for each section of the lesson are listed below.

Fluency Warm-Up (Group Counting) 4 minutes


- Count forward and backward with the following numbers given
- Record yourself and upload the video of you counting the numbers given out loud
These are the numbers to count by for the video:
Threes to 30
Sixes to 60
Sevens to 70
Eights to 80
Nines to 90
- You can record the video by clicking the link on our classroom website and upload it.

Fluency Warm- Up (Identify the Shape) 5 minutes


- Next, click on the Google Form link for the next warm-up. The link is called Identify the Shape.
- Answer the questions about the shapes and how many sides they have.

Application Problem (Introduction) 5 minutes


- We will start the lesson with an application problem.
- Click on the lesson powerpoint to follow along.
The application problem says: Eric makes a shape with 8 trapezoid pattern blocks. Brock
makes the same shape using triangle pattern blocks. It takes 3 triangles to make 1
trapezoid. How many triangle pattern blocks did Brock use?
- Use multiplication and drawing a model to answer the problem.
- Check your answer my clicking to the next slide.

Concept Development (Lesson) 30 minutes


- Keep following the lesson powerpoint to start the new lesson for today.
- Click on the Problem Set page uploaded on the powerpoint.
- Use triangle pattern blocks (online) to cover shapes A and B. Make sure there are no gaps or
overlaps.
- Think about how many triangles it took to cover both shapes.
- Record your answer for Problem 1 on your Problem Set.
- Do the triangles on Shape A and B take up the same space?
- Read the definition of the word area.
- Use different shapes (rhombus and trapezoid) to cover Shapes A and B.
- Record your answers for Problems 2 and 3 on your Problem Set
- What do you notice about the size of the shapes in comparison to how much they cover?
- Record your answer for problem 4.
- Use square pattern blocks for problem 5. Do not overlap squares or leave spaces.
- Read the definition of the word square unit.
- Can you also use trapezoids for the shape on problem 5?

Debrief (Lesson Check) 10 minutes


- When the lesson is done, please go to our discussion blog and answer the questions about the
lesson.

What new math vocabulary did you see today that communicates how much space is taken up by
a shape?
Exit Ticket (Assessment) 5 minutes
- Please go to the Exit Ticket link and complete the questions about our lesson today by taking an

- Tonight, the homework follows the lesson. I have attached a screencast to help you with
homework questions.
