SERVICE LEARNING TRIPS


• Costa Rica- 4 month study abroad program to improve my reading, writing and speaking
Spanish skills. The time was spent exploring Costa Rican culture by living in a host family,
attending classes and going on excursions every weekend.
• El Salvador & Guatemala- 2 week trip with an emphasis on human rights, and social
issues unique to the country. (Social work) Connected with human trafficking survivors,
went into gang territories, and learned about the civil war, and the role that the United
States played throughout the 12-year period.
• Dominican Republic- 1-week trip, spent in clinics working with malnourished children.
We weighed the children, took blood pressure, and passed out rice and vitamins. The
children who were malnourished were sent to a nutrition clinic to regain proper nutrition
habits.
• Virginia- 1-week trip at Bethlehem Farms. Learned about local foods, solar initiatives,
and simple living. Completed home rehabilitations including roofing, painting and
carpentry.
