Register to
recover By Meg Kennedy

Everyone has followed the recent miracle Moorabool News

story of ‘Rove and Ralph’ – the two dogs reunited with their
family at Bacchus Marsh Pound – but time is ticking to get
your own pets registered with Moorabool Shire Council.
Every dog and cat aged three months or more in Moorabool
must be microchipped and registered with council, and all
existing Victorian pet registrations needs to be renewed by
Wednesday, 10 April.
Up-to-date registration can mean the difference between
a beloved lost pet being reunited with its owner – with
our very own reunion happening in Moorabool with Rove
and Ralph, originally from New South Wales, who were
reunited with their owners 200km from home.
“Registration not only helps get your pet home quickly
and easily if it is lost or goes wandering, but also helps pay
for all the domestic animal services run by Council,” said
Andy Gaze, Coordinator Community Health and Safety at
Moorabool Shire.
“In Moorabool Shire we provide not only a service to deal
with wandering animals, but we investigate complaints
regarding dangerous dogs, cruelty and barking as well as
providing cat traps and a pet adoption program,” said Mr
Gaze.
Pet registration is a legal requirement of the Domestic
Animals Act, and unregistered pets or outdated
registrations can see owners fined $322 or more.
For more information on prices and requirements on

Rescue in the Lerdy

Local firefighters rescued a man who fell off a cliff in the Lerderderg State Park near
Greendale, on the Labour Day long weekend, Monday 11 March.
CFA was called to the incident on the Ambler Lane Track just before 10.30am, with six CFA
crews from Ballan, Ballarat City and Blackwood on scene.
The man, believed to be in his 50s, was undertaking recreational activities on the track when
he fell 60 metres down a cliff.
CFA rescue crews worked alongside Ambulance Victoria to undertake a steep angle rope
rescue.
The injured man was placed on a stretcher and brought up to the track before being carried
to the closest road.
He was then transported by paramedics to an Ambulance helicopter who airlifted him to a
Melbourne hospital.
The man was believed to have received serious but non-life-threatening injuries, including
a broken arm

Drugs and
stolen goods
discovered
By Caitlin Bewley
(2nd Yr Swinburne Uni)

A search warrant for stolen goods saw police

attend a Darley man’s home, leading them to
stumble upon various marijuana plants.
46-year-old Trevor Lovett appeared before
Magistrate Gregory Robinson on Friday 29
March to face 10 charges including theft,
assault and cultivation of a narcotic plant
whilst on bail.
On November 1 last year, it was alleged by
the prosecution that a theft occurred in a
Darley home which was later reported to
police.
Prosecutor Senior Constable Lisa
Schoemaker told the court the items stolen
were a $2700 electric scooter, $130 mountain
bike and a $1200 bull bar.
A search warrant was granted on December
10 at the accused’s house in Jonathon Drive
Darley, and alleged the stolen items were
located in his backyard.
Upon finding the stolen items, police noticed
25 small green cannabis plants scattered
throughout Lovett’s backyard, along with
green plant substances in plastic tubs.
The prosecutor said when the accused was
interviewed by police, he told them he “didn’t
know they [the items] were there” and that
“people drop things off [to his house] at all
hours”.
The prosecutor also told the court the
accused “made full admissions to the
cultivation of narcotic plants” and that he had
been “tending to them for three months”.
Lovett was remanded on December 10, and
now been in custody a total of three months
and 19 days.
“He has not used drugs since being in
custody, he would like to engage in drug
treatment,” the accused’s lawyer said.
Lovett’s case was adjourned until April 12 for
an assessment for a community corrections
order. He remains in custody until this Authorised by the Australian Government, Canberra.

Fungi, more than just mushrooms

By Meg Kennedy

It may be crushed under our feet and not given a second

glance, but a local expert’s new book explores why fungi is
so vital to the global ecosystem.
Local environmental photographer and ecologist Alison
Pouliot studies fungi around the world, and her new book
‘The Allure of Fungi’ focuses on the various fungi of 12
countries – including Australia – presented in a series of text
chapters and photo essays.
Although she spends half the year in Switzerland “chasing
autumn” in the northern hemisphere, Ms Pouliot said the
local Wombat and Lerderderg forests of Moorabool have
“a great range of fungi that grow in the many and varied
habitat types of these environments.”
Moorabool is also home to what could be “Australia’s rarest
fungus”, the Auriscalpium ‘Blackwood’.
Ms Pouliot said the rare fungus has “only ever been found
growing on a single tree, a narrow-leaved peppermint
(Eucalyptus radiata), near Blackwood.”
“It was first found in 2005 and so far, has not been recorded
anywhere else,” she said.
‘The Allure of Fungi’ was launched recently in Daylesford
(pictured) and was attended by almost 100 people.
Ms Pouliot hopes attendees discovered that “fungi underpin
pretty much every terrestrial ecosystem on the planet.”
“Although fungi have been largely overshadowed by flora
and fauna in Australia…their vital ecological functions
