skill that I am developing so that it will teach me the ability to work well with others,
communicate, and share the desire to excel through collaboration. Another benefit is
the unique opportunity the learning programme helped me to identify my strengths
and weaknesses what skills do I have and what new skills do I need to acquire so that
I can be more competent and work resourcefully. In my opinion the course had a

by focusing on the opportunities that I can gain advantage in the future. The reason
what makes SWOT particularly powerful is due the ability it can help to uncover
opportunities that are well placed in order to take advantage, and also by
understanding my weaknesses I will also be able to eliminate threats

I was able to clearly identify what my goals are and how I could improve to achieve
them. Within this time period, I was able to learn how to optimize various learning
opportunities. One of which is through the participation to various presentation and
discussion on various topics. Through this learning opportunity, I was able to learn by
means of asking questions and discussing relevant topics. The presentations allowed
me to become open to different ideas as well. Lecture is another learning opportunity
that contributed to my professional development. This has generally helped me to

INTRODUCTION

Effective management skills are always essential in any business, regardless of the
type or size. A required skill package includes the ability to work with people and to
be a team player, an aptitude for finance, a knack for efficient time-management and a
talent for solid planning.

PEOPLE SKILLS

interactions with peers, supervisors, employees and customers. It is important to
create team spirit among peers so everyone works efficiently to achieve desired
results. A supervisor must build good rapport with his employees so that they strive
hard to accomplish goals as a team.

Salesmanship is a people skill necessary for selling projects or ideas to management.

A relationship with supervisors should exist where an employee is considered honest,
capable and accurate. This same relationship needs to exist with customers. The

people, a person must be a good listener and show interest in what is being said.
When dealing with other people, a person must be a good listener and show interest in
what is being said.
TIME MANAGEMENT

Efficient use of time is a primary part of effective management skills. Timely

execution of small tasks makes a successful day.

Effective business management entails using the most efficient method of

communication for each situation, whether it is email, fax, telephone call or written
material. Although it is sometimes necessary or appropriate, personal visits are the
least efficient method of communication.

Conducting meetings in a timely, efficient manner is a necessary management skill. In

most cases, a meeting announcement should be delivered to expected attendees at
least one week in advance. The announcement should include a request for an
immediate confirmation of attendance, purpose of the meeting and the expectations.
An agenda should be attached to the announcement clearly outlining discussion topics
and who will lead each discussion. On the agenda, time needs to be allocated for each
discussion point. During the meeting, the agenda needs to be strictly followed. The
meeting chair must keep each discussion within the time limit and disallow any
discussion that does not pertain to the agenda. Precise minutes need to be prepared
which outline accomplishments of the meeting

PROFESSIONAL SKILLS

NEGOTIATION SKILLS-: a manager should have negotiation skills. Every

organization has unions of workers and they put forward their demands in front of
management and if the management denies they go for strike so, therefore manager
should have good negotiating skills so that the situation of strike is avoided.
Negotiating is an activity we perform on many occasions that we may think we
negotiate to:
• Agree on goal or outcome

• Arrive at comfortable terms so can cooperate or work together
• Reach a compromise of some sort
For instance-: Managers should be able to negotiate between management and
workers
CONFLICT MANAGEMENT SKILLS-: A manager needs to identify sources of
conflict – functional and dysfunctional conflicts, understanding personal style of
conflict resolution, choosing the best strategy for dealing with a conflict and
Developing skills in promoting constructive conflicts in organization and teams.

• Managers should be able to resolve conflicts among union and workers

• Manager should build relationship with all subordinates

• A manager should regularly hold meetings for example every month to

communicate new initiative and current status of the programme

LEADERSHIP-: A manager is the person in charge of commanding and running a

business or a project. Leadership deals with the interpersonal relations. Managing
means planning, developing and organizing Leaders are to lead and in case of

learning and change.
Self awareness helps manager to identify gaps in the management skills which
promotes skills development, self awareness also helps manager to find situations in
which they will be most effective, assists with decision making and aids stress
management of oneself and others.

2. COMMUNICATIONSKILLS-:A manager needs to be an effective communicator

therefore needs to have set of skills such as good listening skills, god presentation
skills and feedback skills. They should effectively communicate with their employees
which will help to solve many problems in the organisation

without any hesitations and could solve the problems efficiently.
Patience is essential as manager coaches and develops people. Even in the cases

Management Skills

To be an effective manager, it is essential to have skills in three different areas: task

execution, commercial insight and people skills. Some managers can get by with
strengths in only one or two of these areas, but the best managers will have some
competence in all three.

Task Execution

To execute complex tasks, manage projects and run an efficient operation, it helps to
be able to plan, organize and monitor performance. It is also important to have a
strong results focus, to be someone who conveys a sense of urgency and has the
perseverance to get things done under tight time pressures. This includes the
resilience to bounce back following setbacks, to be someone who is not easily
defeated.

Commercial Insight

This set of skills emphasizes efficiency and, in the case of private sector managers,
profitability or return on investment. Managers use strategic thinking to ensure that
they focus on the right tasks, those that will add most value. They use their planning
skills to prioritize in combination with the ability to understand how value is created.
This means understanding the financial aspects of running an organization and
allocating all resources at their disposal wisely.

People Skills

Being a skilled people manager includes having the integrity to foster trust and the
emotional intelligence to deal with different people successfully. Effective managers
are also good at empowering, coaching, motivating and developing people. Managers
act as catalysts by bringing the right people together for a wide range of tasks. They
know who can do what and who will work best with other people. They are also good
facilitators, able to ask the right questions to draw solutions out of others. They ask
stimulating questions in a supportive manner rather than behaving like a police
interrogator. Management effectiveness requires clear communication and good
listening skills.

Management versus leadership

Managers occupy positions of authority. Management is a role with responsibilities.

Conversely, leadership is an occasional act, like creativity. It is not a role. Managers
show leadership when they promote change but all employees can advocate a change
in direction. Having a position of authority is not necessary to show leadership.

THE PROCESS

To build an effective management style be natural – don’t try to be or become

someone you are not. Put clear standards in place and ensure all staff is aware of these
– people don’t like surprises and will respond more positively if set rules are in place.
Effective management skills are about ensuring that everyone knows what is expected
of them. Consider asking your staff to set out the standards they expect and then go
through these with them – giving them ownership means they will have already
bought into the management process. Look back on your career and think about the
managers you reported to. What qualities did you like and can you emulate these?

NEED TO KNOW

Effective managers always give feedback openly – this creates an environment of

trust and encourages staff to be open with you in return. And not all feedback is
critical – it’s just as important to comment when someone has done something right

TOP TIPS

To build effective management skills, I have to ensure that to hold regular meetings
with staff – both team and individual ones. Set targets for the next month and examine
any issues that arise – this will enable to revisit how effective management skills are
and need to vary management style.
Effective management skills also mean knowing when to admit made a mistake – it
will ensure the rest of your staff don’t do this and will also make you more human.

TASK5

IMPACT OF LEARNING STYLES

The learning styles helps in developing inner qualities and also helps us to know how
work can be done efficiently. It boosts morale and confidence and leads to overall
development and personality. Learning styles helps in achieving both personal and
organisational objectives

The HONEY & MUMFORD learning style

Honey and Munford (1990) say that learning opportunism has many potential
benefits including
• make learning from experience a more conscious and deliberate process
• helps one to learn from success not just from mistakes
• helps one to keep ahead of, and attuned to change
• provides a recipe for both for ones continuous improvement and helping
others to improve
• meaning one can articulate what one has learned and communicate it to others

Once people minds are focused on the idea that every experience, generating
reflection and self appraisal, becomes an opportunity for self development not
previously conceived as possible, all experience takes on a new value and are seen
as beneficial. It is important to overcome any feeling of embarrassment or shame
over mistakes. The only time there is needed to judge our self is when we have
wasted an opportunity to learn from such mistakes and then continue to make
them.
This process is common to all aspects, if we do not learn and develop as a result
of experiences, the same mistakes and unfortunate experience will continue to
confront us and our progress will be arrested. When success are accepted without
understanding their meaning, then the action taken to create those successes, being
incidental are unlikely to be repeated.

The identified four styles are as follows-:

*Activists – involves themselves fully without bias in new experiences and revel in
new challenges

*Reflectors – they stand back and observe new experiences. They collect data, reflect
on them and come to conclusions

*Theorists – they adopt and apply their observations, they tend to be perfectionists.

*Pragmatists – they try out new ideas, approaches and concepts to see if they work.
One person can have many styles at the same time. I can and will be as time permit a
reflector

Reflector likes to stand back and look at situation from different perspective. They
like to collect data and think about it carefully before coming to any conclusion. They
enjoy observing others and will listen to their views before their own.
I prefer to learn activities that allow me to think, watch, and review what has
happened. I also find lectures very useful if expert analysis and explanation is
provided and also likes to speak slowly after thinking. I enjoy watching people and
tend to be cautious and careful sometimes people seems to me a very quite and shy
guy therefore others think I am reserved.
Lastly I would like to end up by saying that I like to draw up lists possible course
of action and observe others.
We learn all the time, doing so we acquire knowledge, skills and insight.

Today’s work place is unpredictable, and requires a wide range of skills for an
individual to function effectively.
Group and interpersonal skills are essential. Employees need to be multiskilled. The
work place requires showing and applying professional skills. It’s important to be able
to transfer learning from one context to another. Professional skills are skills that you
learned from one company that you can use in another company. These are major
transferable skills that are often possessed by professionals and management level
personnel. From my past experiences I already encompass many personal skills that is
mentioned above, but in new environments it demands active learning, therefore as I
know which is the best learning type I need to develop my learning. I intend to do so
from now onwards.
In concluding I would like to say that today the access to knowledge base is
increasingly readily available, with communication technologies improving. Then
knowledge is more relevant, and more current, and is applied more efficiently and
effectively. Therefore it’s important to always keep on learning and identifying
strengths and weaknesses of the personal and professional skills containing and
always try to be adaptable and flexible to improve these skills in order to achieve the
ultimate vision of the organization.
