What is the definition of theology?

The word "theology" comes from two Greek words, theos meaning 'God'
and logos meaning 'the word about (or the study of) God' as He is revealed in the
Scriptures. Even though our attempts to understand an infinite God will fall short
because of our limited understanding (Romans 11:33-36), God has given us the
Bible for us to study and understand who He is. Some people try to avoid theology
because they believe it is divisive. However, understanding God as He is revealed is
uniting and a beneficial thing (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

Without theology, our relationship with God would be limited. Practically, theology is
reading the Bible to discover what God has said about Himself. Theology teaches us
that God is the Creator, Sustainer and Judge of all things; that He is the Alpha and
Omega, the beginning and the end of all things; that He is, as Moses learned
(Exodus 3:14), the great "I AM", the free, purposeful, self-sufficient, almighty, self-
existing, self-determining Being and not an impersonal cosmic force. Through
theology we learn that God has revealed Himself to humanity through His Son Jesus
Christ and that through His blood we have eternal life.

“Evangelizing means bringing the Good News of Jesus into every human
situation and seeking to convert individuals and society by the divine
power of the Gospel itself. At its essence are the proclamation of salvation
in Jesus Christ and the response of a person in faith, which are both works
of the Spirit of God. Evangelization must always be directly connected to
the Lord Jesus Christ….There is no true evangelization if the name, the
teaching, the life, the promises, the Kingdom and the mystery of Jesus of
Nazareth, the Son of God are not proclaimed.”(#10-11)

Following this defi nition, we have the vision of evangelization for the
Diocese of Camden rooted in the words of Bishop Galante: “Evangelization
is not a program. It is to bring people into a relationship with Jesus”
(Lifelong Faith Formation Director’s Meeting — September 17, 2009). We
see evangelization as a continuous three-step process. We are invited to
live this process and incorporate new parish members into this
experience:

1. Discovering Jesus through a personal encounter with him.

2. Following Jesus, becoming his disciple.
3. Proclaiming the Good News is to be a witness of Jesus.

CATECHIST
In general, one who teaches the essentials of Christian faith and morals. The term
also has the technical meaning of one who gives instruction in Catholic doctrine,
especially in mission lands or among people who are not baptized or who are
dechristianized. As one of the supernatural charisms of knowledge, it is the special
gift of being able to teach the faith with extraordinary effectiveness.
