Introduction to Running Pipe Oil and Gas Wells
Why pipe matters?
Handout 02

Why pipe matters?

Basically, pipe matters because is essential for well construction. Drill pipe is
required to drill the well, casing is required to support it, tubing is then used to
test the formation and more tubing is required to produce the well…

So, without pipe there’s no well!

It’s essential to understand that OCTG is stringently controlled throughout the

manufacturing process. All the dimensions are controlled all the way through
the production line, Length, OD, Internal Diameter, Wall Thickness and Wall
Face Thickness Eccentricity and Ovality are controlled.

Chemical composition and micro structure are tested in several points and
analyzed to ensure it is uniform. Also tensile, hardness and ductility test are
carried out.

After the tube is manufactured, connections are machined onto the end.
Premium connections are very complex, they are machined with a tolerance of
± 0.001 of inch.

So, after applying such an accurate control process and pipe being so
important to well construction, it’s important to take a bit of care and attention
during the installation of such a precious product.
