ITC Increases Learners Motivation

As people know motivation plays an important role in education system Students’ demotivation

is one of the biggest problems has been presented in the learning process. Hence schools and Institutes

have been tried to carry out teaching and learning process through ICT tools, in order to change the

methodology used by teachers during classes and breaks the monotony where teacher only explains the

issue and students just listen what teacher said. The ICT play an important role in learning and teaching

process, however teachers have to take into account what type of work students are to be motivated to

do, and what is the used they have to give ICT tools inside and outside the classroom. Then apparently

ICT have a big impact on students’ motivation that is why it is important to know the aspects that ICT

improve students’ motivation. Therefore, how does one use ICT to motivate students?

ICT "Information and Communication Technologies" is a new technology tool that includes

many communication devices such as computers, cellphones, televisions, video beam as well as many

resources on the net such as applications and web sites in order to facilitate, gives support and improve

the people knowledge. Due to the advantages that ICT provides as a learning tools the Colombian

government is implement the use of this for education propose; although there are many disadvantages

as well. These tools are using as an education tools to implement the learning abilities, nevertheless the

main purpose is motivate students to acquire knowledge in an easy way, using different devices which

students not only use in the classroom but they use in daily life.

Many studies about the use of ICT for students’ motivation have confirmed that ICT has a big

impact on students’ behavior.1Don Passey, et al. (2003) assisted by the Department for Education and

Skills (DFES), did a researching about the effects of information and communication technologies

(ICT) on students’ motivation. The main propose was to find out the impacts of ICT on motivation and

related issues such as learning outcomes, behaviour, school attendance and to quantify any impacts

where possible. As might be expected the result were very convincing Don Passey, et al. (2003) could

find that after all the motivational impact of ICT was positive, although the activities were not

implement that it should be, they refer to the environmental context.

Other studies not only focus on the impact that ICT promote inside of classroom but also the

impact and the behaviour of students outside of classrooms, 2 Passey, Don et al. (2004) consider that

students who use the technology outside the classroom “in their home” are more competitive and more

confident than students who do not have it or not use it in home. “Young people with a computer at

home are less likely to play truant at ages 14 and 16 than those without computer access. For example,

having access to a computer at home is associated with a 5.8 per cent reduction in the likelihood of

playing truant at age 16.” 3 (Underwood, 2009).

4
John Woollard (2007) made a review and he establishes that a theoretical model of motivation

involving the four key elements of goals, interest, conceptions of ability and intrinsic motivation. Then

students are able to complete their task, fulfill his goals and the teachers’ aims. Besides while students

learn using ICT teachers play role of observer, guide and facilitator.

ICTs can promote lifelong independent learning skills “Impact of Information and

Communication” It means that students can increase their autonomy using this tools.

Many people believe that the use of ICT in school is not good idea 6Jozef BUSHATI et al.

believe that the use of ICT “May affect the connection process between teacher and student, as ICT

become a communication tool instead of face to face communication, so the distance of the transaction

will increase” however we as teachers have to take into account what is the used they have to give ICT

tools inside the classroom.

As we know many people believe that using ICT tools is not good to students because they tend

to spend much time using it. For instance the use of the net and the computers; some students are

addicts to chat, to play video games, among other things, that is why most of teachers do not like to

implement the different issues through this tools but I consider that we as a teachers have to find out

the best way to use that tools in order to change the traditional methodologies. Also use ICT is the best

way to motivate students to learn.
