A. Preparatory Activities
1. Drill
Drill on multiplication
2. Review
Volume of a Solid Using Standard Units
3. Motivation
Show a transparent plastic container filled with balls. Ask the pupils to guess the number of balls
inside the container. Let one pupil count the balls to find the answer. Ask them how they can make a
good guess of the total number of balls.
B. Developmental Activities
1. Presentation
Mother has a rectangular box. It has a length of 10 cm, a width 4 cm and a height of 3
cm. What is its volume?
Ask: What does mother have?
What is the length? Width? Height?
What is asked in the problem?
How will you solve the problem?
Explain how to determine the volume of the prism.
2. Performing the activities
Group activity
Divide the class into 3 groups. Distribute 1-cm cubes, a ruler, and a rectangular prism with 4
rows, 3 columns and 10 layers. Ask them to work together and find the volume using the rows, columns
and layers. Aside from counting the number of cubes and multiplying the number of rows by the
number of columns and by the number of layers, ask them to think of other ways to find the volume.
Solutions: By measuring the length, width and height using a ruler.
By relating the number of rows, columns and layers with width, height and length of the
container.
By multiplying the length l by the width (w) and by the height (h).
V= l x w x h
= 10 cm x 4 cm x 3 cm
= 120 cm3
