CHECKLIST FOR WRITING ABSTRACT

An abstract is an abbreviated version of your project final report. It is limited to a maximum


of 250 words. Since an abstract is so short, each section is usually only one or two sentences
long. Consequently, every word is important to conveying your message. It's like an
advertisement for what you've done.

A. Introduction.

 Did the author describe the purpose for doing reasearch in a particular field?

 Did the author explain why should anyone care about the work s/he did?

B. Problem Statement.

 Did s/he identify the problem to be solved and the hypothesis s/he
investigated?

 Did s/he determine the scope of his/her work (a generalized approach, or a


specific situation)?

C. Procedures.

 Did s/he analyse how s/he went about solving or making progress on the
problem?

 Did s/he mention what important variables s/he controlled, ignored, or


measured?

D. Results.

 Can the reader identify the answer s/he obtained?

 Is the hypothesis accepted or rejected?

E. Conclusions.

 Did s/he meet his/her objectives?

 Are the conclusions supported by data presented in the abstract?

STYLE
o Is it in the required formal style? Did s/he avoid jargon?
o Is it easy to read rapidly? Does it flow logically?
o Do the major points stand out? Did the author use appropriate subheadings,
spacing, indexing, graphics, and other mechanics? Are all parts of the text
completed and proofread?
o Did s/he avoid abbreviations or acronyms that are not commonly understood
unless described what they mean?
o Did s/he avoid citations, tables or graphs?
