SAFETY SIGNS (OSHA/ANSI)
Safety signs are crucial to workplace safety and provide warnings, instructions,
and recommendations to workers. The signs need to be noticeable, easy to read,
and in most cases will need to comply with OSHA and ANSI standards.

 CHOOSING THE RIGHT SIGN HEADING

Safety signs are distinguished by their heading. OSHA/ANSI standards require
safety signs to feature a signal word along with the corresponding color. A safety
hazard symbol is placed in the header if potential personal injury is present.

 CHOOSING THE RIGHT SIGN MATERIAL
Sign materials are not one size fit all! You will want to select sign materials based
on the location and environment of where the sign will be hung up. You should
select the durability level and mounting option that best fits your workspace.

 Is it going to be used OUTDOORS?

Aluminum signs are made of heavy duty material designed to hold up in
nearly any environment. Aluminium is the recommended sign material for
outdoor application.

 Is it going to be used INDOORS?

There are several options of sign materials for use of indoors including
permanent and removable self-sticking vinyl, PVC plastic, and magentic
options. Each feature different mounting options and durability levels.

 CHECK FOR SAFETY SIGNS

Take a walk around your facility and look for areas that will need a safety sign. Note the
location, the appropriate and applicable heading, the present hazard, and how many
signs you will need in that particular location. Each chart lists different areas to check in
your facility.

Valve tagging is an important, albeit overlooked, component of an effective pipe marking
strategy. A valve tag is any type of tag that can be attached to a valve, usually located at
the end of the pipe. Valve tags can be made of plastic, metal, wood, or even paper and
usually contains an indentifying number and intructions on whether or not the valve is
supposed to be opened or closed.

GHS LABELS
As of June 1, 2016, all companies are required to comply with the Globally
Harmonized System (GHS) labeling requirement. Facilities that use or
manufacture hazardous chemicals will need to comply with the GHS standard.
These labels include six seperate components: the chemical name, a corresponding
signal word, hazard pictogram(s), a hazard disclaimer, precautionary/first aid
directions, and the manufacturer’s contact info.

 GHS HAZARD PICTOGRAMS

The following are the nine pictograms officially approved by GHS and OSHA. These
pictograms are meant to be easy-to-see with bold borders and distinct imagery.

Flame Over Circle Exclamation Mark

Oxidizers Irritant, Sensitizer, Other

Flame Environment
Flammables Environmental Toxicity

 CHECK FOR COMPLIANCE
Check documents, chemical containers, storage, and shipping containers to ensure their
compliance with the GHS requirements.

DOCUMENTATION
Written HazCom plan that tracks your chemical inventory and outlines how
your company responds to hazardous chemicals
SDS’s (Safety Data Sheets- formerly called MSDS) are filed with the written
HazCom plan or using SDS software

CHEMICAL CONTAINERS & STORAGE

Primary chemical containers (drums, barrels, bags, boxes, etc.) from the
manufacturer
Note: These should be generally already labeled by the manufacturer. If labels are
missing, they must be replaced.

Secondary chemical containers (spray bottles, jugs, bottles, jars, etc.)

Note: Secondary labeling is not required when ALL the following criteria are met:
• The material is used inside of the work shift of the employee who made the
transfer
• The worker who made the transfer is in the work area the entire time during use
• The container stays within the work area and in the possession of the employee
who filled the container

TOOLS, TOOL CRIBS, TOOLBOXES
Having a messy and disorganized workplace can be a real headache and can lead
to a significant amount of waste. When a workbench, a toolbox, a tool chest, or
a work cell is cluttered and has tools strewn about, wastes can add up and your
workplace can pose a safety hazard to workers.

 CHECK FOR TOOL BEST PRACTICES

Tool organization works best when it is customized to your specific workplace. That
being said, there are a handful of best practices that can help you in creating a new tool
organization stratgey in your facility.

All toolbox drawers and cabinets are visibly labeled and accurate

Individual tools are labeled and/or color coded where appropriate

Toolbox drawers are organized and fitted with foam or other dividing material
to prevent tool loss or drawer damage

When possible, tools utilize a “let-go” system- attaching tools with a

retractible cord to allow them to return to their original position
Tools hanging on the wall or pegboards use shadowboarding to clearly show
any missing tools

Employees are aware of their individual workstation tool organization

responsibilities

Tools are sorted and divided in an orderly and easily accessible manner, with
the most commonly used tools being

Signs are posted in visible locations (walls, floors, etc) to remind employees
of tool practices and procedures

Power tools, computers, measurement tools, and other expensive equipment

are tagged and logged to allow for check-in/check-out

FLOOR MARKING
Floor markings can improve a workplace as a form of communication utilizing
visual cues. Floor tape can outline aisles and walkways, floor signs can alert
people to the presence of a hazard, and shapes such as T’s, X’s, and corners can
keep equipment and materials where they belong.

 COLOR RECOMMENDATIONS FOR AISLES/LINES

Floor marking color Description

Yellow Aisleways & Traffic Lanes; ‘Paths of Egress’; Work Cells

White Production -OR- Racks, Machines, Carts, Benches

Red Defect/Scrap Area; Red Tag Area

Orange Material or Product Inspection -OR- Energized Equipment

Green Materials & Manufacturing: Finished Goods

Blue Materials & Manufacturing: Raw Materials

Black Materials & Manufacturing: Works In Progress

Black/Yellow Areas which present physical or health risks to employees

Red/White Areas to be kept clear for safety reasons

Black/White Areas to be kept clear for operational purposes

 REQUIRED LINE WIDTHS

To ensure maximum visibility, the required minimum width for facility aisle and
floor marking lines is 2”. Therefore, any width above that is considered acceptable
by OSHA and ANSI. Most applications use tape or painted lines with 2” - 6” widths.

FLOOR MARKING www.creativesafetysupply.com | 1-866-777-1360

Floor Tapes VS Floor Paints
Industrial grade floor tapes are typically preferred over painted lines
for most floor marking jobs for a number of reasons including higher
durability, no mess, and far less maintenance or upkeep.

 MARKING WAREHOUSE AISLES

Warehoses typically feature a number of aisles, but aisles can also be found in
supermarkets, hosipitals, manufacturing facilities, and construction sites. Safety and
efficiency can be noticeably improved when aisles are appropriately marked with floor
tape.

Determine the number of aisles that you have, and identify how long the aisles
are. Multiply this number by two (you’ll need two lines per aisleway) and you
should arrive at an estimated length of aisle marking you’ll have to account for.

 MARKING SAFE PEDESTRIAN WALKWAYS
Creating specific lanes for pedestrian and machinery traffic can drastically improve
safety. Forklift collisions with workers are a major cause of workplace fatalities and are
a clear indicator of the importance of safety. Emergency routes can also be determined
using floor tape and can help both workers and visitors locate exits quickly.
Measure the lengths of your safe pedestrian walkways and emergency exits. Be
sure to account for both sides of the aisles.

 MARKING ALL ELECTRICAL PANEL BOUNDARIES

Electrical panels in the workplace pose a very dangerous risk. To keep workers safe,
OSHA requires facilities to take steps alerting people to the potential danger and the
area should not be approached without the proper safety gear. Put floor markings
around electrical panels as a perimeter. This will ensure the area is kept clear.

Measure the perimeters of your electrical panels. A safe estimate of tape per
panel is 25 feet.

It is critical to alert employees and visitors to potentially hazardous areas and visual
markings like hazard striped floor tape should be used to identify specific hazards.

 MARK YOUR DOOR SWING AREAS

An often overlooked hazard are doors in a facility.
When opening a door in a warehouse, unsuspecting
workers on the other side can get seriously injured.
Door swing indicators clearly highlight the area where
a door may swing, communicating to worker to take an

 INSTALL VIRTUAL FLOOR SIGNS IN

EXTREME TRAFFIC AREAS
Certain situations may call for a different type of floor
marking: virtual markings. Virtual floor signs and
crosswalks can be extremely helpful in dark or unlit
areas of the facility and the design, color, or size can be
easily adjusted. These virtual signs will never need to
be cleaned and moved around the facility.

WORK CELLS & WORK AREAS
When work areas are clearly marked, there’s less chance of other tools, products,
or equipment being placed in the wrong spot.

 CHECK FOR WORK AREA BEST PRACTICES

Tool storage stations are clearly marked

Visual communication, including floor marking, instructs workers where

things are

Organizational tools like shadow boards, pegboards, or tool foam organizers

are present

 TAKE ACTION: ORGANIZE WORK AREAS

Ensure all items around the workplace have a home and the facility is properly
marked for them.

 GO TO THE GEMBA
Going to the “gemba” or “real place” allows you to get an accurate idea of what
improvements need to each work station’s organizational system.
Learn more about gemba at www.creativesafetysupply.com/gemba-guide

 GET WORKERS INVOLVED

Involving workers in the implementation of organization systems ensures success and
sustainability of whatever methods you choose.

 FIGURE OUT WHICH ORGANIZATION METHODS BEST SUIT YOU

We carry a number of organizational tools like pegboards, shadow boards, and more that
can help you stay organized and productive—choose the ones that best suit your needs.

RED TAG AREAS
An essential step in 5S is the Sort step, which requires
workers to sort through all of the things in their work areas
and remove everything that isn’t essential to getting daily
tasks done.

Red tags provide a valuable service by helping workers

determine whether or not an item is essential.

Learn more at www.creativesafetysupply.com/5S-red-tags

 TAKE ACTION: SET UP A RED TAG PROGRAM

 USE RED TAGS TO MARK POTENTIALLY

UNNEEDED ITEMS AND TOOLS
Red tags give you the option to determine if items should be
donated recycled, relocated, or removed from the facility.
You should also note the date it was moved, where it was
found, how long it should be held, and the item itself is. Be
sure to log the items tagged in a 5S red tag register.

 ESTABLISH A RED TAG HOLDING AREA

Sort through any given work area and attach red tags
to items that need to be reevaluated at a later time.
Using floor tape, posters, and/or signs, mark off a
‘Red Tag Holding Area’ to keep these tagged items for
the time being.
