This document outlines the rationale and objectives of a study on improving energy efficiency in buildings of Bhutan Power Corporation Limited. The rationale includes that no prior study has examined electricity consumption in BPC buildings to determine potential savings. The study aims to lower energy use intensity to decouple economic growth from energy consumption and carbon emissions, while enhancing energy security and generating financial benefits for Bhutan. The objectives are to study Bhutan's energy situation, types of buildings and energy use patterns, assess energy policies and their impacts, and provide a framework for the research.

No prior study on the electricity consumption has been undertaken in any of the buildings in Bhutan Power Corporation Limited to determine if it can be minimized and hence contemplated to benefit the company with the results of this study. The findings of the study can be used as benchmark for other BPC buildings in an effort to improve the energy efficiency. Lowering the energy use intensity in order to decouple economic growth from consumption of energy resources as well as the carbon emission. Enhance energy security in the country. Financial gains such as domestic savings and additional revenue generation for the country. Reduce fuelwood consumption resulting in maintaining of carbon sequestration capacity
1.3 Objective of the study
The study attempts to achieve the aim of the research study on the improvement of the energy efficiency in the BPC corporate building and therefore covers the following specific objectives: To study the energy situation in Bhutan To identify the types of buildings in Bhutan and the energy use pattern To assess the energy policies and its impact To provide the preparatory framework for the research study. 1.4 Scope and limitation Provide opportunity to know about the buildings and its energy consumption in Bhutan while not enough literature is available for comprehensive studies
