Chapter Three

Research Methodology

3.1 INTRODUCTION

The objective of the research is to find out the roles of interventions in SMEs. It particularly

seeks to study the roles of Government & NSSBI , Banks and other financiers and the impact

they have had on SMEs in the Ho Municipality. This section is in two parts. The first looks at

how data of the research were gathered, the research method employed in the study, the data

collection techniques used and the target population, the sample size and sampling techniques as

well as the data analysis method employed. The second part was focused on the roles of Banks in

SMEs in the Ho Municipality.

3.2 Research Design

The research was focused on Small Scale Enterprises operating in the Ho Municipality of the

Volta Region and as such the definition given by ( Dalitso & Quartey, 2000) , was employed.

The following were keen for the research; SMEs, Rural Banks and Micro Finance Institutions,

As such most of these are noted to be part of the SMEs in Ghana which accounts for about 22% of

Ghana’s real GDP (ISSER, 2003).


3.3 Study Area

Ho is a town and the capital of Ho Municipal District in the Volta Region of Ghana. Ho lies

between Mount Adaklu and Mount Galenukui (Togo Atakora Range), and is home to a museum,

a cathedral and a large prison. Volta Region is one of Ghana's ten administrative regions. It is to

the East of Lake Volta. Its capital is Ho. The Volta region of Ghana lies to the East of the Volta

Lake. The region covers an area of 20,570 square kilometres representing 8.6% of Ghana.

Between latitudes 5° 45’N and 8°45’N. Between the Volta Lake by the West and East by the

Republic of Togo and south by the Atlantic Ocean. 20,570 sq. kilometers i.e. 8.6% of the total

area of Ghana. The Region spans all the vegetational zones of the country stretching from the

Atlantic coast in the south to the north.

The region’s population in 2000 was 1,635,421. This implies, an increase of 35.0 per cent over

the 1984 count 1,211,907, giving an annual growth rate of 1.9 per cent. The intercensal growth

rate shows little change from 2.0 per cent in 1970, 1.8 per cent in 1984 and 1.9 per cent in 2000.

The population density of the region increased from 59 persons per square kilometre in 1984 to

79.5 persons in 2000.ement population of 96,213 people. It was the capital of British Togoland

As a region which contains the capital city of the Volta Region, it is battling with rapid

urbanization due to the administrative functions it performs in the area of retail trade, business,
culture, education and political . It also attracts migrants, from neighboring countries More

females (69.3%) are self-employed than males (60.0%).


3.4 Population

The entire population of the research covers Rural banks, Microfinance institutions in Ho and Small and Medium

Enterprises in the Ho Municipality. The questionnaires were answered by 21 respondents of operators of Small

and Medium Enterprises, 2 by Rural Banks and another 2 by Microfinance institutions

3.5 Sampling Techniques

The research used purposive technique to sample the Rural Banks and Micro Finance institutions however,

Simple Random technique was used for the Small and Medium Enterprises in the Ho Municipality.

3.5. Sampling Frames.

Two sample frames was used in the research, Financial Institutions and Small and Medium Enterprises.
3.6 Sample Size

A sample size of 25 participants was targeted for this research and therefore an appropriate

number of questionnaires were prepared to meet the target. The Researcher duly distributed the

questionnaires to the respondents and there was cooperation on the part of the respondents.

3.7 Data collection technique

The data for this study were gathered through the use of primary and secondary data sources.

The primary data source for this study involved the use of questionnaire. The questionnaires

were distributed to SME operators and/or owners for first-hand information for processing

towards answering the research questions . These questions helped to identify the SMEs and to

critically analyze the roles of interventions in their operations. It also helped to know the roles of

the Banks and other financiers in the SMEs. The secondary data were obtained from reviewing

journals and literature relevant to the subject matter of this research. Newspaper source and

official policy documents of government of Ghana with relevance to the subject were also

consulted.

3.8 Data Analysis and Presentation

The data obtained for the research was analyzed using SPSS version 16. Data analysis was

mainly descriptive in which frequency tables were used for the pictorial presentation of the data

and inferential.
