ABSTARCT: The effective design and construction of earthquake resistant structures have
much greater importance all over the world. Reinforced concrete multistorey buildings are
subjected to most dangerous earthquakes. It was found that main reason for failure of RC
building is irregularity in its plan dimension and its lateral force resisting system. The present
study aims to evaluate the seismic response of the (G+7) RC multistory building of both
regular and irregular plan configuration by Response Spectrum Analysis (RSA). This study
includes the modeling of regular and L-shape plan irregular building having area of
24.89x21.70 m and floor height of 3 m with G+7 storey. All models are analyzed with
earthquake loading for the Zone III. Result found from the response spectrum analysis in
irregular shaped building displacements is more than that of regular shaped building. All
building frames are modeled & analyzed in software Staad.Pro V8i. Various seismic
responses like base shear, storey drift, lateral force, displacement, etc. are obtained. The
overall performance of regular building is found to be better than the irregular building.

KEYWORDS: Irregular Plan Configuration building, response spectrum analysis, lateral loads, base shear,
storey drift, storey displacements.
1) INTRODUCTION
Earthquake means the sudden vibration of earth which is caused by naturally or manually.
We know that different types of irregularities in buildings are used in modern infrastructure.
The behavior of building during earthquake depends critically on its overall shape, size and
geometry. Buildings with irregular geometry respond differently against seismic action. The
structure must withstand against lateral force acting on the structure due to the seismic load
and other natural calamities.
In this journal the comparative studies is done for the zone III by providing the required
size of the columns and beams by following Indian standards. The effects of plan irregularity
on structure have been carried out by using structural analysis software STAAD Pro. V8i.
The results are studied for response spectrum analysis method.
2) OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
 To compare the behaviour of a RC regular building and plan irregular building in
terms of response spectrum analysis.
 To compare the base shear, storey displacement, storey drift and lateral force of both
regular and irregular L shaped building for each storey.
 To calculate the design lateral force on regular and irregular buildings using response
spectrum analysis and to compare the results of different structures.
 To identify the best building configuration from this analysis.
3) METHODOLOGY
RESPONSE SPECTRUM METHOD BY USING STAAD.PRO
Response spectrum analysis in STAAD. Pro the design lateral shear force at each
floor in each mode is computed by using the equation
Qik=Ak * Øik * Pk * WI Eq.1
the value of Ak and WI has to be defined by the user. And Qik and Pk values are
calculated by the STAAD.Pro. STAAD.Pro utilizes the following procedure to generate
the lateral seismic loads. We have to specify the value for (Z*I)/2R as factors for input
spectrum. Then the program calculates the time period for number of modes as specified
by the user. Then the program calculates Sa/g for each mode utilizing time period and
damping for each mode. Then the program calculates design horizontal acceleration
spectrum Ak for different modes. Further STAAD.Pro calculates mode participation
factor for different modes. Then the peak lateral force at each floor in each mode is
calculated. Further the using various combinations (CQC or SRSS or ABS or TEN or
CSM) methods as specified by the user the final results are calculated.
LOAD COMBINATIONS USED:
The following load combinations shall be accounted for as per IS1893 (part1):2002
1) 1.5(DL+IL) 3) 1.5(DL±EL)
2) 1.2(DL+IL±EL) 4) 4 0.9DL±1.5EL

5) CONCLUSIONS
From the data revealed by the manual as well as software analysis of the structures using
various load combinations, the following conclusions are drawn:
1. Response spectrum method allows a clear understanding of the contributions of
different modes of vibration. It is also useful for approximate evaluation of seismic
reliability of structures.
2. Seismic analysis was done using STAAD PRO software and successfully verified as
per IS 1893-2002.
3. There is a gradual increase in the value of lateral forces from bottom floor to top floor
in software analysis.
4. Calculation of seismic weight by both manual analysis as well as software analysis
gives exactly same result.
5. Maximum displacement for irregular shapes and minimum for regular shapes.
6. Irregular shape building are severely affected undergo more deformation during
earthquake especially in high seismic zones.
