Part II: Essay

Choose 6 questions (6 out of 10) and answer them accordingly. You should take pains to make
your answers as complete, carefully organized, and clearly written as possible. Support your
claims with references to specific philosopher and their writing (i.e. citation, text or books).
Grades on the recitation will be based not simply on whether your claims about the text are true
or false, but on the appropriateness and persuasiveness of the supporting citations, and on the
detail, clarity, and completeness of your answer. Don't quote long passages in your answers
instead give a summary in your own words. Make sure you give references so I can look up the
passages you are referring to as I read them.

1. What is the relationship between psychology and education? How can one employ theories of
learning in the emerging roles of educators in the present times? 15 pts.

2. Among the different theories of Sociology of Education (Functionalist, Conflict and Critical)
which is the better way to manage a school or an academic community? 15 pts.
3. Studying different educational philosophies involves understanding both the ways in which
they conflict and the ways in which they can co-exist. Similarly comparing them helps us to
understand sources of conflict as well as compatibilities, WHICH PHILOSOPHY OR
PHILOSOPHIES WOULD FIT YOUR our educational system, culture and management? 15 pts.

4. Explain and explore this statement: Globalization as externally driven changes in education.
Among the reasons for this change include the assertion that vision provides direction and an
opportunity to engage in developing and introducing innovations in the provisions of education,
and affords institutions to gain forward momentum as current status of institutions and programs
needs are assessed and carried forward to the future. In the light of these changes in education,
what are the different philosophies that influence globalization and why? The process of
envisioning involves among others brainstorming and free discussion of philosophical ideas,
beliefs, theories and scenarios in education: programs, students, teachers, curriculum, teaching-
learning processes, graduates, assessment, among others. This also includes discussions on
school’s core values, guiding principles, and institutional beliefs. The whole point of this
exercise is to establish shared beliefs that will constitute the philosophical foundation of
education and the future of institution or program.

Your own ideas, beliefs, theories and scenarios in education and/or program are crucial
toward building that philosophical foundation. You are given the opportunity to clarify
these and have them counted as integral part of the school’s or program’s future.

Extend your discussion to include narratives of the scenarios as individually informed by

different philosophical theories vis-à-vis: design of curriculum, teaching and learning
designs, design of assessment and use of the results, students’ learning experiences, and
the knowledge that students will gain from such teaching and learning experiences.20
pts.

philosophies of education

6. Suppose for the sake of argument we grant that the failure to produce the ideal citizen is not
solely a problem of formal education, that it could be a political failure, a cultural failure, or
whatever: still we can ask what is the failing of formal education in this process. There are all
sorts of possible reasons for educational failure: poor teachers, poor students, poor courses, poor
sequence of courses, too many students per teacher, etc.

7. Can virtue be taught? How? Cite some specific pedagogical examples.10 pts.
