Q. 1 a) What do you know about measurement scales? Discuss briefly with examples.
b) What do you know about Skewness and Kurtosis? Explain briefly.
Q. 2 Explain the following in detail with examples.
Q.3 The finished inside diameter of a piston ring is normally distributed with a mean of 10
centimeters and a standard deviation of 0.03 centimeter.
a) What proportion of rings will have inside diameters exceeding 10.075 centimeters?
b) What is the probability that a piston ring will have an inside diameter between 9.97 and
10.03 centimeters?
c) Below what value of inside diameter will 15% of piston ring fall?
Q.4 a) If 20% of residents in U.S. city prefer a whit telephone over any other color available, what
is the probability that among the next 1000 telephones installed in this city
b) A pheasant hunter claims that she brings down 75% of the birds she shoot at. Of the next
80 pheasants shot at by this hunter, what is the probability that
i) at least 50 escape? ii) at most 56 are brought down?
Q5. A manufacturer has developed a new fishing line, which he claims has a mean breaking
strength of 15 kilograms with a standard deviation of 0.5 kilogram. To test the hypothesis that
µ=15 kilograms against the alternative that µ<15 kilograms, a random sample of 50 will be
tested. The critical region is defined to be x < 14.9.

Audit ($) 130 102 129 143 149 120 139 146 152
At the .10 significance level, can she conclude that the mean daily expenses are greater for
the sales staff than the audit staff? What is the p-value? Also find 90% C.I for the
difference of the population mean.
Q.10 Assume that SAT mathematics scores of students who attend small liberal arts colleges are
N ( ,8100) . We shall test H 0 : 530 against the alternative hypothesis H 0 : 530 .
Given a random sample of size 36 SAT mathematics scores, let the critical region be defined
by C {x : x 510.77}, where x is the observed mean of the sample.

a) Perform the analysis of variance at 0.05 level of significance, and determine whether or
not the 5 brands sell, on the average, the same number of cigarettes at this supermarket.
b) To test the hypothesis that the variances of the 5 populations are equal.
Q.7 The following data represents the statistics grades for a random sample of 12 freshman at a
certain college along with their scores on an intelligence test administrated while they are still
seniors in high school.

a) Calculate and interpret the correlation coefficient.
b) Stat necessary assumption on random variable.
c) Test the hypothesis that 0.5, against the alternative that 0.5, . Use p-value in
calculation.
d) Set the 95% confidence interval on correlation coefficient.
Q.8 a) A random sample of size 22 pairs from a certain bivariate population gave r1 0.4 another
random sample of 18 pairs from another bivariate population gave r2 0.5 . Test the
hypothesis that both the population have same correlation coefficients at 0.05 level of
significance
b) The samples of sizes 18, 22, 26, 32, 40, 46, and 52 are drawn from a same parent
population, yielding values of sample correlation coefficient 0.42, 0.63, 0.48, 0.51, 0.65,
0.42 and 0.52 respectively. Use these values of ‘r’ to obtain a combined estimate of
population correlation coefficient. Test the hypothesis that the samples comes from same
bivariate population. Use 0.025 level of significance.
Q.9 An experiment was conducted to determine if the weight, y, of an animal can be predicted
after a given period of time on the basis of initial weight, x1 , and the amount of feed eaten, x2
.The following calculations have been made for a random sample of 10 animals.

a) Find and interpret the partial correlation coefficient for y and x2 when x1 is held fixed and
y and x1 when x2 is held fixed.
b) Find and interpret the multiple correlation for the above data Ry.21 .
c) Test the hypothesis that H0 : y 2.1 0, vs H1 : y 2.1 0, and H0 : y1.2 0, vs H1 : y1.2 0 at
0.05 level of significance.
d) Test the hypothesis that H0 : y.21 0, vs H1 : y.21 0, at 0.01 level of significance.
Q.10 In an experiment to determine the different three missile systems is preferred, the propellant
burning rate was measured. The data, after coding, are given in the following table.
Missile 1 24.0 16.7 22.8 19.8 18.9
System 2 23.2 19.8 18.1 17.6 20.2 17.8
3 18.4 19.1 17.3 17.3 19.7 18.9 18.8 19.3
Use the Kruskal-Walis test and a significant level 0.05 to test the hypothesis that the propellant
burning rates are the same for the three missile system.
