Objectives
SWBAT demonstrate “rest” and “prep” positions for recorder
SWBAT recall and play the note B & A on recorders using gentle, soft air
SWBAT play the song Queen B with the recorded accompaniment using correct fingerings, air
production and rhythms
SWBAT play the song Skating Away with the recorded accompaniment using correct fingerings,
air production and rhythms

Materials
Recorders, Sheet Music poster (Queen B, Skating Away), Accompaniment Track for Queen B,
Skating Away (Rhythm Cards, Fingering/Note Cards)

Procedure

1. Greet students as they enter the classroom. Students have assigned seats and know where
to sit in the classroom.
2. Take attendance; mark who is absent on the attendance sheet
3. Formal Greeting to introduce class
↪ T: ​Good Morning, Fourth Grade! Today we are going to continue playing out
recorders! We will be reviewing our fingerings and learning two new songs!
4. Request two volunteers come up to the front of the room and distribute recorders
↪ Students should leave recorders in their bags until further instructions are given

Review from Last Class (1/24/19) - Ask Questions & Give Reminders
1. Which side points away? → S ​ ide with more holes
2. What hand goes on top?​ / ​What hand goes on the bottom? ​→ L / R
3. Describe the kind of air to use when playing recorder
↪ Gentle, soft, whispering, cool
4. Remember to cover the holes completely, this will help prevent squeaking
5. Look for ‘fingerprints’, your fingers should firmly cover the holes so you get circular
imprints on your fingertips

IF TIME PERMITS:

OBJ: SWBAT recite rhythms when prompted using “Ta”, “rest” and “Ti-ti”
1. Students move recorders to rest position
2. Teacher presents rhythm cards to students
3. T: I will hold up a card and you are going to repeat the rhythm back to me using “Ta”,
“rest”and “Ti-ti”
4. T: What do the “Ta” stand in for? “Rests”? “Ti-ti?”
5. S: ​Quarter Notes, Quarter Rests, Eighth Notes
6. Teacher demonstrates reciting rhythms using “Ta”, “rest”, and “Ti-ti”
↪ (Remember to count off using “One, Two, Ready, Go!”)
7. T: We are eventually going to play these rhythms on our recorders, but for now let’s just
speak the rhythms
8. T: ​Hold up cards, Count students off using “One, Two, Ready, Go!”
9. T&S: ​Speak notes in rhythm

OBJ: SWBAT play rhythms when prompted using notes B & A on recorders
1. T: Now we are going to play these rhythms on our recorders
2. Students move recorders to prep position
3. After several rounds of flipping cards, select one student to hold and flip the rhythm cards
and a second to hold the note cards. Teacher will count students off to play the rhythm
and note presented and move about the room to assess hand position and air production
4. T: Find a friend and switch cards!
5. Repeat several times

OBJ: SWBAT improvise four-beat melodies using the notes B & A and rhythms quarter
note, quarter rest, and eighth notes
1. Students move recorders to rest position
2. Teacher asks for a volunteer to play a four-beat melody using the notes B & A and
rhythms Ta, rest and Ti-ti. The rest of the class will repeat the melody back
3. Teacher calls on students who have exhibited excellent class behavior to improvise a
four-beat melody
4. 1 S: ​Plays four-beat melody
5. T: Counts off students using “One, Two, Ready, Go!”
6. T&S: ​Repeat four-beat melody
7. Repeat several times
