Research Proposal

I have always had an interest in animal research/experimentation

because I am an animal lover. In High School my close friend introduced me to

the many injustices that animals are subjected to, experimenting is one. She is

very creative and did a art project devoted to animal testing. The project

included paintings of animals “imprisoned” by large company testing. One

example is a rabbit that appeared to be in a cage however, the bars of the cage

were made up of different products made by a cosmetic company. Through her

I learned more about the companies that participate in animal testing and how

harmful or even fatal it can be to animals. I am happy to see that more

cosmetic companies today are focusing on organic ingredients that do not

require testing to find out its effect. I think it is better to use products that are

derived from a natural source rather than chemicals, especially on your face. In

my opinion animals are not able to speak to defend themselves so humans

need to do it for them.

Pharmaceutical companies are another perpetrator in animal testing. I

know this first hand because my mom is a nurse and she has done research on

this topic when she was in nursing school. Most pharmaceutical companies

test new medications on animals before they are able to pilot them on humans.

Once a new drug is considered safe for a animal they will run trials on humans.

Most companies test on animals to determine if the drug is toxic or harmful.

The issue that I have with this process is, an animal’s system may not react to

the drug the same as a human's system. What may be successful in animal

trials may fail in human trials. In my opinion animals and humans are very

different and it is hard to predict a reaction to a medication through animal

testing.

1. How do I feel about this topic? Animals aren't able to defend themselves

and I believe it's wrong for companies to use these animals to their

advantage in very cruel ways. Their are companies researching

alternatives to animal testing and I believe more attention and money

needs to be given to these companies.

2. What do I think about this topic before doing the research? I think that

this practice is very inhumane and needs to be changed. There is no

benefit to the animals from testing, they are subjected to dangerous tests

that may take their lives.

3. What do I believe about this topic? I believe that animal testing is not

necessary and there are alternative methods to testing cosmetics and

drugs.

4. What do I already k
now about this topic? In almost all circumstances

testing has a very negative effect on the animal being tested. Some

animals are becoming more of a rarity due to the demand of using

certain types of animals for testing.

I want to research deeper into the alternative methods of testing other than on

animals. I also want to educate those who don't understand the negative and

harmful effects testing has on animals. My main source of research will be

scholarly websites because they are the most reliable. Questions I have about

this topic are, what is the effect of using animals in scientific and medical

testing? Is this practice morally acceptable? And what are the alternative

testing and are they as effective?
