Lesson Plan: You


This lesson plan accompanies Business Result Second Edition Starter, Unit 1.

This lesson is suitable for students at the early stages of their Business Result Starter course
and beyond. However learners will need to already be familiar with the different text types
that come up in the lesson, such as dialogue and notes.

Lesson Goals
1. To familiarise students with the format of the Business Result Second Edition Starter
2. To develop language vocabulary in order to talk about peers and jobs
3. To practise Business English – key skills including self-introduction and spelling

Activities

Warmer 5 – 10 min
Focus students’ attention on the dialogues. Elicit what they 2 min T-S
should do in this part, listening and repeating the example
shown in the dialogue (item 1 and 2, page 4).
Group students in pairs. Ask them to stand up and imagine 2 min S-S
they are in a meeting and improvise a short conversation,
introducing themselves (item 3, page 4).
Finally, briefly ask each student to make a self-introduction in 4 min S-S
front of the class (item 4, page 4).
Introducing yourself 10 – 15 min
Show the students the pictures. Ask students what they are 2 min T-S
about. Tell students they are going to listen and read the
vocabulary (item 5, page 5).
Ask students to listen and repeat the vocabulary (item 6, 1 min T-S
page 5).
Tell students they are going to listen and complete the 2 min T-S
dialogues with a job from the pictures on page 5. Check their
answers (item 7, page 5).
Pair students to practise the dialogue (item 8, page 5). 2 min S-S
Ask each pair to readapt the dialogue using their names and 2 min S-S
jobs (item 9, page 5).
Language at work 15 – 20 min
Ask students to listen and read the dialogue (item 1, page 6). 1 min T-S
Write up am/are and its contractions on the board. Explain 2 min T-S
its use.
Ask students to complete the table. Check their answers 1 min T-S
(item 2, page 6).
Divide students in group of four to practise the conversation 1 min S-S
(item 3, page 6).
Tell students they are going to listen and complete the 2 min T-S
dialogue. Check their answers (item 4, page 6).
Group students in pairs. Ask them to choose a job from the 2 min S-S
list and ask and answer questions (item 5, page 6).
Focus students’ attention on the listening activity. Check 3 min T-S
their answers (item 6, page 7).
Pair students to discover each other badges by asking 2 min S-S
questions (item 7, page 7).
Practically Speaking 10 – 15 min
Listen and elicit students to repeat the letters of the English 1 min T-S
alphabet (item 1, page 7).
Pair students to randomly choose 5 letters from the keyboard 2 min S-S
and check each other spell (item 2, page 7).
Tell students they are going to listen and complete the table. 3 min T-S
Check their answers (item 3, page 7).
Pair students to spell the names in 3 (item 4, page 7). 2 min S-S
Ask each pair to spell their names (item 5, page 7). 2 min S-S
Business Communication 15 – 20 min
Read and ask the students to repeat the Key Expressions 5 min T-S
shown. Explain each and its application. Then, check their
pronounce (page 8).
Tell students they are going to listen and match the pictures. 2 min T-S
Check their answers (item 1, page 8).
Ask students to match the sentences. Check their answers 2 min T-S
and speaking (item 2 and 3, page 8).
Elicit what they should do in this part, highlighting and 3 min T-S
correcting the mistakes. Check their answers (item 4, page 8).
Divide students in group of three to practise the conversation 2 min S-S
(item 5, page 8).
Talking Point 5 min
Ask students to complete the expressions and practise the 5 min S-S
conversation.
Extension Activity 1 min
Encourage students to complete the exercises from pages 56 1 min T-S
and 57.
