Literature Review: [Specify your title with
twenty words or less]
This template’s purpose is to be a guide and format for the preparation of the literature review
required for the accreditation of the Inquiry Seminar as part of the admission requisites of the Master
of Engineering in Quality and Productivity.

A subject will be assigned by the course’s instructor and you should develop it. The purpose of this
exercise is for you to understand if the research aspect of the MCP is within your interests and to
provide the admission committee with a document for the assessment of your candidature.

Elaborate on the scope of the subject and explain why it adds up on the MCP’s line of knowledge
generation and application.

Keywords
Identify seven or more keywords that help you to filter the scientific literature to find current works on
the subject.

Related papers or patents

Find twenty items that support your literature review. They shall be published in the last five years,
any previous work worth citation if they are landmarks in the field of study.

Outline of Existing Works

Use the table that follows to organize the list of sources you plan to cover in your review.

Category (such as time period or premise) Title of Work, Author Name

Category (such as time period or premise) Title of Work, Author Name

Commented bibliography
Prepare detailed comments on the literature that support your topic and that provide leads to define
valid research questions and hypothesis. The blocks in this section will be used for the upcoming ones
to elaborate your analysis of current work.

Overview
This is a good place to present the theme of your review and to summarize the types and relative value
of the available literature as it relates to your theme. Remember that a literature review is not a book
review—it’s a critical analysis of the literature available on the topic.

Comparative Review
Most literature reviews explore the comparative value of the available works on the subject as they
relate to your topic or theme.

Gaps in Available Research

Are there areas of the topic that existing resources miss? For example, are there clear gaps that can
benefit from new works on the topic, or gaps that expose weaknesses in a given argument?

Contrasting Opinions
Did you include works that provide contrasting perspectives to your own? You can add to the critical
value of your review by taking a look at your own objectivity.

Conclusions
The sections included here are just examples to help you get started. You might need more or different
sections and might want to organize some parts of the review outline shown here into multiple sub-
sections (such as to break out the comparative review for more detailed analysis).

Research questions
Define three research questions that reflect your findings in the literature review; they may serve as
the foundation for a good research methodology.

References
List your sources here using the most current Journal of Animal Science citation style.

points grading grading
The review includes twenty or more scientific papers or patents 20
that are actually related with the research topic. The literature
cited is current and scientific in nature.
The English style and grammar are correct, with professional 30
vocabulary and all major statements are warranted with data
and logically supported.
The organization of the literature review leads the reader to 30
identify the major opportunities to set a research agenda for the
topic.

Research agenda
The following research topics are examples of previous thesis developed within the scope of the MCP.
The subject you would be assigned with may be within the following research agenda; but, it is not
limited to it.

 Improvement of non-quantitative product features’ controls using advanced digital signal or

image processing for inspection automation.
 Improvement of products processes and engineering systems using statistical techniques in
novel approaches and applications beyond conventional ones; for example, optimal design of
experiments, robust design, parameters design.
 Novel applications of quality approaches for product development and process improvement
with few reported cases; in fields like biotechnology, pharma, non-repetitive-manufacturing,
additive-manufacturing, water-based paintings, PCB manufacturing, STEM education and low
volume high reliability manufacturing (aerospace).
 Novel approaches for reliability testing development using advanced statistical techniques that
are beyond conventional applications and standard practices.
