STEP Standard 7 – Reflecting on Instruction to Improve Student

Progress
Improved Practice Based on the Unit of Study
Based on the experience of developing and delivering your instructional unit, list three short-
term goals to improve specific areas of your teaching practice based on the unit of instruction
and describe your plan to reach each short-term goal.

Plan to Reach the Goal (i.e., professional

Short-Term Goal development, research on the Internet,
observation of a veteran teacher, etc.)
1. My first goal is to work on my teacher I will continue to observe my Cooperating
language, particularly, my reminding, Teacher during her lessons and take
redirecting, and reinforcing language thorough note of specific phrasing/word
with students. selection she uses, tone, and overall pacing.
It would be beneficial to observe teachers in
other classrooms as well to gain additional
insight and understand effective strategies
that best fit with my teaching style and
personality.

2. My second short-term goal is to plan In order to achieve this goal, I would love to
lesson and activities that foster higher attend professional development
levels of engagement and opportunities (local/national conferences and
communication. webinars) that focus on increasing student
engagement, collaborative experiences,
and/or communication development. I also
believe that books would support my growth
as well. My list includes titles: The Wild
Card, Teaching Kids to Thrive, Educated by
Design, and Teach Like a Pirate.

3. My third goal is to be more intentional For this goal, I believe that continued
and consistent about differentiating observation of my Cooperating teacher and
instruction for my higher-level other teachers at my student teaching school
learners. site would be helpful. In doing so, I will be
able to directly see them implement a wide
variety of practices, strategies, and skills to
support students. Additionally, I have found
lots of useful information online in the
teacher/education community. By
researching best practices for differentiating
instruction, I would be able to try out
possibilities and adapt to suit the lessons and
abilities of all students in a more meaningful,
intentional way. If successful, I would be
able to add to my teaching repertoire.
