Observation #1 Lesson Plan

Standards:
2.FL.PWR.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills when decoding
isolated words and in connected text.
2.FL.PWR.3d Decode words with common prefixes and suffixes.
2.FL.WC.4 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills when encoding words;
write legibly.
2.FL.WC.4d Use conventional spelling for regular two- and three-syllable words containing
combined syllable types, compounds, and common prefixes and derivational suffixes.

Lesson Topic: Suffixes -ful

Objectives:
Content – Students will understand how the suffix -less or -ful changes the meaning of a word
Language – Students will understand how to use words with a -less or -ful suffix in authentic
ways

Learning Strategies: graphic organizer, questioning

Key Vocabulary: prefix, suffix, root word

Materials: labeled paper bags, word cards for sorting, concept circle poster, pictures of words,
puzzle pieces, recording sheets

Motivation (building background): Bag sort


• Review what a prefix is
• Introduce each paper bag, each labeled with a prefix that we have learned (re-, dis-, un-)
o As I am introducing each bag, asks students for definition of each
o Students can label each bag with a definition
• Each pair will be given a handful of cards with words on them. Pairs will discuss a.
which bag the word should be sorted into and b. what the word means
• Students will take turns sorting their words into bags and sharing with the class what their
words mean.

Presentation (Content and language objectives, comprehensible input modeling, strategies,


interaction, feedback):
• We’ve been talking a lot about parts of words that we can add to the BEGINNING but
there is also parts of words we can add to the END
o Introduce the concept of suffix and how it is different from prefix
• Today we are going to learn one kind of suffix: -ful
• Concept circle activity:
o Middle circle is filled in, multiple example words in the inside ring
o Work together to define each word (share pictures, use TPR)
o Work together to define the suffix

• Puzzle pieces
o Students will be given a puzzle pieces with different words, prefixes, and suffixes
on them
o Students can work in pairs or groups to “put together” and record as many words
as they can using their puzzle pieces.

Review & Assessment (review objectives and vocabulary, assess learning):


• At the bottom of the paper, students should choose ONE word to use in a sentence.
