Impacts of Social Networking Sites in students’ Academic Performance

Research Design

This study exploit the quantitative research design which is descriptive and correlational

in nature.

The descriptive research design is adopted for this study that describe the defining

characteristics and particular concepts of interest. The design is considered apt because it enables

the researcher to generate data through the standardized collection procedure based on highly

structured research instrument(s) and well defined study concepts and related variables. The

researchers utilized this research design since the study sought to determine the relationship

between of social media and the students’ academic performance.

Population of the Study

The population of this research study were the students of San Rafael National Trade

School from Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics, Accountancy Business and

Management, Industrial Arts, and Home Economics with total population of 480.

The research used probability sampling technique to determine the samples for this study.

Probability Sampling involves allowing every members of the population to have a non-zero

chances of being selected.

Instruments of the Study

A survey instrument was developed to know if the relationship of the use of social media

with regards to the academic performance of the Senior High School Students. The instrument

consisted of six (6) questions, were each question has different variables. The source of the data

in this study was the survey questionnaire. The questionnaire method was adopted.

The first part contained some of the social media platforms that commonly used by the

students. The second part talks about the purpose of social media on the students. The third part

is based on the hours spend by the students using social media platforms. The fourth part of the

survey consisted of seven (7) statements which was rated by “yes” or “no”. It talk’s about the

uses of social media platforms of the students. The social media usage was based on the ideas

found from the reading of the other researcher’s findings and investigation. The fifth and sixth

part of the survey are consists of seven (7) different statements that shows the positive and

negative effects of using social media. It can be rated by answering “yes” or “no”.
