Overview in Hemostasis *single megakaryocyte / Mature megakaryocyte -1000-

4000 platelets (ensure stop of blood)

Hemostasis – combination of cellular (platelets and
endothelial cells) and biochemical events (action of * whole maturation takes 5 days; Lifespan: 8-11 days 
coagulation factors and fibrinolytic substance) SEQUESTRATION\

• Heme – blood  2/3 – circulation

 1/3 – spleen; splenectomy
• Stasis – halt/stop
Structure of platelet:
*referring to platelets, coagulation factors, fibrinolytic
substances working all together to achieve stoppage of - Discoid
blood when then is vascular injury - Surface has a lot of glycoproteins (made of
sugar and molecules)
Functions:
Platelet function:
1. Stoppage of blood
Upon injury; destroyed endothelium (lining: simple
2. Localize the reaction to the site of injury (no squamous)  Expose basement membrane  expose
destruction na walang sugat) COLLAGEN and vWF
3. Repair and Re-establishment of blood flow 1. ADHESION
(nutrition will respawn)

2 STAGES HEMOSTASIS

 PRIMARY HEMOSTASIS
- Bleeding time
- Blood Vessels And Platelets
- end: PLATELET PLUG
 SECONDARY HEMOSTASIS
- Clotting time
- Coagulation factors
- Intrinsic pathway and extrinsic pathway will
converge to common pathway
- end: STABLE FIBRIN CLOT
*stable fibrin clot needs platelet plug and that’s
why it is a continuous process, cannot form this
without the surface provided by platelets

PRIMARY HEMOSTASIS

- Components: BLOOD VESSELS & PLATELETS

- Vasoconstriction – first hemostatic response to
injury; lumen will become small and they
constrict so that the delivery of blood is
lessened; sustained process. How?
- Vasodilation – first immunologic response to
supply chemicals needed for inflammation to
proceed
- Blood vessels: “vasoconstriction”
1. Arteries – thickest; pump blood; deliver
oxygenated blood: heart to tissue
2. Veins – tissue to heart
3. Capillaries – gas exchange happen

Platelets:

Megakaryoblast  Promegakaryocyte 
Megakaryocyte (immats or mats)  Metamegakaryocyte

*platelets – from mature megakaryocyte –

cytoplasmic fragments
