Student Teaching edTPA Indirect Instruction Lesson Plan Template

Subject: Science/Health Central Focus: Genetics

Common Core/Essential Standard Objective:

5.L.3.1 Explain why organisms differ from or are
similar to their parents based on the characteristics Date submitted: 3/11/19 Date taught:3/13/19
of the organism.

Daily Lesson Objective:

Performance: After students identify whether they have a certain type of inherited trait or not, they will take an exit
ticket that evaluates their understanding of different inherited traits

Conditions: Students will work in independently as they find their specific inherited trait

Criteria: To show mastery, students will receive 3 out of 4 on their exit ticket.

21st Century Skills:

Academic Language Demand (Language Function and
Critical Thinking and Problem Solving
Vocabulary):
Students as inquirers frame, analyze, and synthesize
information as well as negotiate meaning across
Language Function: Explain
language and culture in order to explore problems
and issues from their own and different
Vocabulary: Genetics, inherited trait, genes, heredity
perspectives.

Prior Knowledge: 5.L.2 Understand the interdependence of plants and animals with their ecosystem.
Students will use 5.L.2 as their prior knowledge to help make connections of ecosystems and how ecosystems begin with
organisms.

Activity Description of Activities and Setting Time

Students will get a sheet named, Do Now #76. 5 min
These Do Now will have questions from previous lessons, current lessons and
1. Engage future lessons. Students will be asked to try their best for questions that refer
to future lessons.

We are going to take a Genetics Survey. 15 min

For this survey, everyone will be given a small post it.
If you look around the room, I have taped 10 sheets with different
inherited traits.
How can we determine if a certain trait is an inherited trait?
(Allow for responses)
We are going to get up and move around the classroom as we read each
2. Explore
inherited trait. You will determine whether you have a specific trait or
not.
Then you will write your name on the post it and put it under the
correct column.
You will have 15 minutes to walk around the classroom as apply and
evaluate your traits in order to chose a side on the paper.
Genetics Guided Notes 20 min
On Monday, we focused on genetics and inherited traits.
What does genetics mean?
What does inherited traits mean?
We also spoke a little bit on acquired traits and learned behaviors.
What are acquired traits?

How does heredity determine inherited physical traits?

What makes an inherited trait different from a learned trait?
Let’s review some of our vocabulary words we’ve been discussing in
order to understand the concept of genetics
-slides will contain:
What is:
-heredity
-genes
-trait
3. Explain -inherited
-acquired
Ask a student to read a different slide every time.

After, students will do a group pop quiz on the board. Teacher will read
the question and students will answer.
Questions on slide include….
Which of the following is not an inherited trait?
What type of trait do offspring get from their parents?
How do offspring get their genes?
Which of the following is an acquired trait?
Where do genes come from?
Which of the following is not an example of a learned trait?
Where are genes located?
Which statement is true?
(a gene carried an inherited trait? A trait produces a gene, a trait can only be
learned, children pass inherited traits to their parents)
Which trait cannot be passed on through a living thing’s genes?

After the Mastery Connect, teacher will pull small groups of students to go 15 min
over the exit ticket.
Teacher and student will go over questions that students got wrong and
4. Elaborate
elaborate on the question.
Small groups will be called based on the question they got wrong.

5. Evaluate Mastery Connect

Assessment Methods of Informal: asking students out loud as we review the slides on PP
all objectives/skills Formal: Exit Ticket (4 questions)
You will now take an exit ticket based on what we have been working on
throughout this week.

Questions:
1- Offspring are similar to their parents. Which is an example of how a
plant would be similar to its parents?
2- Many traits are inherited from parents. Which could be an example of
a trait that Toni did not inherited from her parents?
3- Many traits are inherited from parents. Which would be a trait that
Tiffany inherited from her parents?

6. Assessment Results of
all objectives/skills
