Classroom Learning Profile based on observations and data

Use readings and EDUC 202 self-reflection assignments from the past to describe your placement class:
Nieto & Bode; Understanding Culture Brief; Hoeksema; Pearson 202 custom textbook; Barringer, Pohlman, & Robinson

The class is a part of the Forest Hills Public Schools system. Students are expected to be respectful
and responsible. Emphasis in learning independence. Second grade class. Emphasis in community and
Culture helping others. Eighteen students. Some students eat breakfast at the school.

Chinese immersion within the school of the placement. Within my class, the students are quite diverse
ethnically, where there are about three Indian students, around three African American students and a
Race & Ethnicity
Chinese student.

I think most of my students have mothers and fathers, from what I have seen and heard from other
Social Systems- students.
Peers & Family

There is no religious affiliation within the class, being a public school system. One student wears a
hijab. Students had to call out things that represented Valentines Day and one student answered “My
Moral, Spiritual, and God!”
Faith Development

Attention varies with on each of the students. One student may have a very short attention span and
may be looking around the room instead of looking at the teacher when she is speaking. Another may
fully be looking at the teacher when she speaking. When I’m working with students individually, a
Attention & Memory few may stay on task, while others may move around in their seat and talk, instead of working.
For memory, the students seem to do well with memorizing policies and values of the teacher and the
classroom. They remember the routines, too.

English is the Chinese student’s second language. English is for the most part, the students’ first
language. Many of the students speak fluently and confidently, while a few are very quiet to the point
where the teacher tells them to speak up. One student I know does a great job with saying bigger
Language words. Many students are struggling with pronunciation.

The students are quite skilled in handwriting for where they are at in school. Their handwriting is
readable. Many students don’t work very quickly. When I work with them in ten minute one-ones,
Motor & many of them may not make any progress in their work. A few students struggle with journal write
Spatial/Sequential ups for books they read. Students can copy well from examples of tables or diagrams.
Ordering
Students are challenged to think independently and to not need help in their work. There seems to be
students who do well with creative thinking, while others struggle. Critical thinking seems to be a
Higher Order Thinking struggle for many students also.

One student seems to be very challenging behavior wise. I’m not sure if it’s a mental issue or not. He
goes to another classroom to do independent work every day I believe.
