Learning Intention: Standard(s):
I will identify key details of an expository text to help
me understand the main idea of each section. I will use RI.3.1 Key Ideas and Details
my main idea and details to help me summarize each RI.3.7 & RI.3.8 Integration of Knowledge and Ideas
section. SL.3.1 Comprehension and Collaboration

Success Criteria:
I will use the summary guide to share three summaries
with partners.

Unit Context/Prior Lesson:


The prior week involved the comprehension skill of reread for realistic fiction genre. Comprehension skill (main idea & details) has
been used in prior units. Yesterday’s lesson involved a shared read of the expository text being used today.

Bellringer (Warm Up/Hook/Activator/Engagement/Review):

Students will begin the lesson sharing idea, details, or information from the shared read, which was read the day prior. This
expository text is about service dogs and how they help rescue people. I will utilize random selection of students (using sticks or
randomize via ClassDojo).

Body of the Lesson

Introduction Introduce weekly concept and review learning intentions (5 minutes):


Engage - ​Students will begin the lesson discussing their prior knowledge of main idea/ details and summarizing.
Students will work in a think-pair-share setting to discuss. Visual prompts will be provided in Slides on Smartboard
(see below). I will walk around listening to the partners as a form of formative assessment.
Learning Intentions​ - Review learning intentions, success criteria which will be displayed on whiteboard used for
learning intentions.

Whole Whole group / small group (20 - 30 minutes):


Group/ Small 1) Whole group (>5 minutes) - ​Direct/explicit instruction of the worksheet and model how to find key details
Group and main idea.
2) Independent Reread (5 minutes)- ​students will reread the assigned sections of the text.
3) Small group (15 minutes)​ - groups will work together to complete a worksheet identifying details and main
idea. Students will use sticky notes with the worksheek (see sample of worksheet on last page).
4) Partner work (10 minutes)​ - Once students have completed the main idea/ details worksheet, they will be
instructed to rearrange the sticky notes from the opposite side of the paper to help them summarize.
Students will take their worksheets and practice summarizing with random partners using musical partners.

Differentiation/Modifications:

EL Students ​- EL students will be provided with sentence stems and will work in designated ELD group the day prior. In ELD group,
we will work with verbs from the text and apply correct verb tense to sentences within the summary.

Low-achieving students​ - Low readers will use computers and online curriculum program to listen to the text in small group. Once
they have completed, I will guide them through discussion to find details and main idea.
Behavioral student - ​Abraham W. will be given the choice to work independently during the small group work. I will check in with
him to give him his choices and explain an alternate assignment as a second choice.

Summary/Closure/Assessment:
Provide students with an exit ticket to fill out. Exit ticket will answer the following question: when will I use summarizing OUTSIDE
the classroom?
