QUESTION 1 (50 MARKS)

A continuous three-span one way slab is supported on four beams as shown in Figure 1. The edge
beams do not provide significant rotational restraint to the slab. For this slab:

(i) Using the simplified approach in AS 3600, determine the ultimate moments and shears at
supports and at mid-spans for the first two spans (note the third span is the same as the first
span) (8 marks)

(ii) Design the flexural reinforcement at the critical locations and determine the transverse
reinforcement required throughout the slab. (26 marks)

(iii) Check the ultimate shear capacity of the slab and comment on its adequacy. (8 marks)

(iv) Check the deflection serviceability limit state for this slab (based on deemed-to-comply
requirements in AS3600) and comment on its adequacy (8 marks)

DATA
Compressive strength of concrete, f’c = 25MPa
Yield stress of steel reinforcement, fsy = 500 MPa
Dead load (including the slab self-weight), FG = 5.25 kPa
Imposed (live) load, FQ = 3.0 kPa
Density of Concrete = 25 kN/m3
Concrete cover = 25 mm
Slab thickness =220 mm

QUESTION 2 (50 MARKS)

The reinforced concrete short column cross-section shown in Figure 2 contains 8 N28 longitudinal
bars. For the bending of the column about the x-axis:

(i) Determine the design axial crushing load Nu0. (10marks)

(ii) Find the design axial load Nu and design moment Mu when the neutral axis coincides with the
tension steel (neutral axis depth parameter, ku= 1.0). (10 marks)

(iii) Find the depth to the neutral axis dnb at balanced failure and hence determine the design
balanced failure values of Nub and Mub. (10 marks)

(iv) Calculate two further point (Mu, Nu) for a value of dn <dnb (e.g., dn= 100 mm; dn= 50 mm) and
sketch design section capacity diagram (Points A-D) [Consider Muo=598 kN.m] (20 marks)
